Low-carb bootcamp

No initial weight loss?

I started this on Friday. I've been good since. Keeping carbs to less than 20g per day, and checking what I eat religiously.

I've had no weight loss yet. I had a headache and sore throat on Saturday, and spent yesterday aching and feeling very flu-ey. I'm off work today with it. I've also had diarrhoea, which hasn't been pleasant.

Is this par for the course? I've heard of carb flu but I thought I'd at least loose weight!

It will come! Your body is having to adapt. Are you drinking lots of water? Once I started doing that the weight began to drop. I also lose when I cut out dairy.

It can take longer for some people than others depending on whether you've recently been on a calorie-restricted diet or if there are any hormonal imbalances that need to be reset. Are you drinking lots of water? That can really boost the weight loss.

I'm trying to drink lots. I might not be getting it quite right, though...I don't really like water. I'll try to increase this and see if it makes a difference.

Calorie-restricted diet could be playing a part, too. I usually live on 1200 calories, mainly carbs. I'm quite small, so that's all I need (and I've got used to it, probably from a diet way-back-when).

I'll hold on and hopefully see progress soon!

If you have been on a calorie-restricted diet then when switching to a low carb diet your body can start out by replacing lost lean body mass. So you could be losing fat but not weight. Measurements are the best way to track your weight loss, I do waist, hips, bust, forearm and wrist. I didn't even know I had fat wrists but I lost half an inch from them! I always have an item of clothing that's a bit too tight to wear comfortably. At the moment I have a pair of jeans in the next size down that I can only just do up. When I can wear them comfortably then I'll know I've lost weight because the scales fluctuate wildly up and down.

You've only been doing it since Friday! You need to be more patient.

How much water are you drinking?
What have you eaten in a typical day so far?
Important to remember that to start with you can't deprive yourself. Eat lots of fat with some protein and veg.
Careful when drinking filtered water, I found it made me feel unwell. I am drinking tap or mineral bottled water now and had to in early days when my body was adjusting take over the counter rehydration powder to fight off my headache.

Is mineral water good for getting your electrolytes up? I use Lo Salt and Iodised Salt to try and get more electrolytes but magnesium can be hard to get.

I found this:
www.ion.ac.uk/information/onarchives/tapspringmineral

most Magnesium (mg/l) is in Evian, Vittel, Buxton and Brecon Carreg

Thanks Antimatter, I've been getting cramps but I can't find a multivitamin with decent levels of trace minerals. I'll buy some mineral water instead.

Did you try some dehydrating powder yet?

also read about taking a tcp of pink Himalaya salt for rehydration
I am yet to find not very expensive but reliable source myself :)

antimatter my ponies get Himalayan salt licks, they cost about £3-4/500g I don't know if you have a horsey shop near you but you could buy one and chip bits off it Grin

Or just lick it?!

sounds like a plan!
I can lick it whilst commuting - I can hang it in me in my car Grin
