Low-carb bootcamp

Next Low Carb Bootcamp starts on 5 May!

If you're interested in joining us, sign up here. Bootcamp lasts for 10 weeks, and starts with two strict weeks, before you move on to Bootcamp Light for the remaining 8 weeks.

You aren't allowed to eat:

potatoes
pasta
rice/noodles
bread
sugar
flour

And for the first two weeks you can't eat fruit or drink alcohol

The idea behind Bootcamp is that whilst it should be strict (and therefore, hopefully, work!) that it should also be easy - therefore there is no weighing or counting of anything. Just ten rules that you need to follow.

So if you're interested - put your name down here!

To give you a bit more information, here are the rules of Bootcamp (the first two weeks)

1. Eat three, proper meals a day. You must eat breakfast. It doesn’t have to be a lot, but you must have something. For the rest of the day, if you’re eating enough food and you are in ketosis then you shouldn’t be hungry. But if you are hungry, eat something. (Hard boiled eggs make a great snack)

2. Avoid processed food, and focus on pure, natural protein as the basis for your meals – meat/fish/eggs. Things like sausages, ham, bacon, pre-prepared burgers etc should be avoided as much as possible. Avoid foods marketed as low carb, e.g. Atkins Daybreak bars.

3. Maximise your fat intake. Fry in butter, add butter to vegetables, eat salad with a home-made vinaigrette dressing (not made with balsamic vinegar though), add mayonnaise where you can (just check the carb count on your mayo first). Eat fattier cuts of meat – e.g. pork belly, roast chicken with the skin on and/or eat the fat off your lamb chops. Absolutely no low fat/light foods of any kind!

4. Make sure you are eating vegetables and salads with your food – this is where your carbs should come from. But choose only those vegetables that are on the allowed list. You don’t have to weigh/count carbs – this is one of the great joys of this WOE (way of eating), but if you’re new to low carbing it can be helpful to weigh your portions of veg in the early days, just so that you know how many carbs are in the sort of portions that you like to eat

5. Minimal dairy (apart from butter, which is unlimited). If you are still drinking tea/coffee with milk or cream, try to restrict yourself to max 2 cups per day. You may eat cheese, but only in small amounts.

6. You must drink a minimum of 2 litres of water per day. The more weight you have to lose, the more water you should drink

7. No alcohol

8. No fruit

9. No nuts/seeds

10. No sugar or artificial sweeteners

I'm in!

I have to go gluten and dairy free soon anyway (bf DD with possible intolerances) so hoping to tie it in with losing weight and not feeling so hard done by.

Did this last year and lost 3 dress sizes - another couple to go!

I'm scared but interested. I live for bread & potatoes. But am already off alcohol and have cut right back on fruit so I'm halfway there I guess. I have about 4 stone to lose.

Quick question - why is dairy restricted but not butter?

Count me in then. Gulp.

Dairy - milk, cream and cheese - can cause people intolerances, although butter doesn't, because most of the milk proteins are removed.

here's a good link to explain why

Haven't looked into this before, but I know I need to break the relationship I have with carbs/sugar.

Will there be suggestions of what can be sensibly eaten etc?

I'm in.

BecauseImWoeufIt · 20/04/2014 23:33

There will be, Hissy. I'll get everything sorted out and will post a thread about a week/10 days before we're due to start, so you can plan/shop for it.

I'm in...I think.

I picked up a running injury before Christmas and managed to put on 2 stone of comfort eating. Thankfully healed now so am back working on my fitness levels.

How does low-carbing work with running & biking?

Per recipe or per day? If you go to the Spreadsheet and look at the ubercamp plan (tabs on the bottom of the spreadsheet) there are plans for 3 days which are all well under 20g carbs per day.

Feathers - you will find it very hard going to start with, until your body switches from burning carbs to burning fat. This should only take around 2 weeks, but can take up to 4 weeks. However, once you have made the switch, you will find that you have much more energy, and you won't need to constantly 'refuel' with energy bars/drinks, etc. No more bonking!

I'm in. I really need to focus on upping my water and I have been eating lots of cheese and nuts which I think has slowed me down a bit over the past couple of weeks.

Perfect timing, I'm in. Haven't been to the gym for the best part of 2 weeks and eaten tonnes of refined carbs. Energy levels are at an all time low and I have a really bad candida imbalance.

Looking forward to getting on track.

Me please.

Lurked on the previous boot camp so I'm glad this one is starting and I can join in properly.

Ive tried before but I think my one big hurdle is that I hate hate hate eggs so always struggled with breakfast and gave up. Yoghurt just didn't fill me up.

Strangely excited!

Feathers - if you're interested, there's a really good book called "The Art and Science of Low Carbohydrate Performance" by Drs Volek and Phinny. It was written specifically for athletes and explains why low carbing is, in fact, a better way to eat if you're training hard for something. 'Hitting the wall' or 'bonking' are phrases used to describe the point at which your body runs out of energy from carbs - and you have totally depleted your glycogen stores, hence having to take on board energy bars/drinks, etc.

Whereas if you're burning your fat for fuel, you will have more than enough as a source of energy - even if you're slim.

I'm really pleased to get this chance to thank you for these threads BIWI.

I started the last bootcamp in early January but hardly posted on progress.

I wasn't hugely overweight but all my clothes were starting to feel tighter, and I've got a big event mid-May so gave it a bash.

I struggled quite a bit for first 2 weeks, couldn't eat enough fat, and didn't give up wine. It took till week 4 to start falling but I've gone from 10 stone-ish to 9 stone and am very pleased.

I didn't make things any easier by switching to 50/50 roll-ups and vaping, from 30 normal cigs a day!

Just as an aside, I had a cholesterol test just before Xmas and all the results were higher than acceptable. I was prescribed Statins, again, but didn't take them.

By mid-March all 4 measurements were down 20% and the consultant had assumed that I had taken the statins! BP down too.

So, FlowersGinFlowers for you BIWI Smile

And good luck everyone, persevere, it works.
