My husband and i are separating- he's back at his mum's place and we're selling the house a.s.a.p. - there's no way i could have afforded to stay on there and have had to leave job because it was a struggle to juggle childcare when ex 'helped' out let alone on my own- my asd son can't be left with anyone else.
The thing is, I'll be lucky enough to have some money left after house sale because of the increase in prices - after we have cleared all our debts.
So do I just use the money to pay for private renting until it drops right down enough to apply for council help?
Have any of you been in a similar situation?
I get so confused as don't know the system. i've got to dig out wage slips, bank statements, contact of employment, childminder contract, etc for 3 months because tax credits people are wanting them, and trying to get the house sorted for sale (ex won't help) and apply for stat assessment for my just dianosed son - everything happening at once and head feels ready to explode! My youngest not at pre-school yet so am keeping her entertained while doing diy!
Sorry for rant but am left to sort it all as usual- main reason for marriage ending-and don't want to screw up!

oh god yes i am in this situation too, though i still hoping to stay in the house, it wont be long before it has to be sold.

Is there no way you can put all the money into your parents' hands, and claim you have nothing? Then you wont have to spend all your profit?

If you can prove that any profit will be used as a down payment on another house then the benefits office usually allow a time frame for this. If you just intend to rent, they will expect you to use this money before claiming most benefits.

As for the suggestion of transferring the money to your parents, I wouldnt. Its fraud and they will find out. Then any future claims for benefits will be affected.

Just another thought, remember to claim for disability living allowance for your son too,you may have already but just with you saying he is newly dx. if he is awarded DLA then you will entitled to a higher rate of tax xredit too
