Single parents - earning £8000?

I earn roughly £8000 a year (self employed) I'm trying to work out housing benefit tax credits etc. I have two little dc's. A friend who only earns around £400 a month only gets £20 a week HB - is this right?

I did it reckons I'd get around £120 a week. But the first person I saw at the council said I'd get nothing, the second said the first was the wrong. I simply can't afford a house if I don't get any...

i earn £6000 per year i take home after national insurance £490. I get about £52 per week housing benefit and 11p per week council tax benefit. i get £151 per week child/working tax credits and ds is in nursery 2 days per week.

I have one ds 2.7.

Im guessing your friend should be getting a bit more?

that doesnt sound right only £20 a week

i only work 8 hours as i have child with medical probs, i earn £237 a month and get most of my £650 rent paid.

the entitledto benefits calculator is spot on if you put your correct figures in

lunavix do you work over 16 hours per week, if so you would get wtc and that would be calculated as income when working out the housing benefit, the same would go for ctc and maintenance, it would also depend on your rent as housing benefit will only pay the market rate.

How much housing benefit you get partly depends on how much the rent is for your property????

I earned a lot more than that 5 years ago and got about £350 per month towards a rent of £750 per month

I think I was earning around £13,000 at the time it was before CTC/WTC in the days of WFTC which I must have received too. I was most stunned that they accepted £750 was a reasonable rent, it was for the area but council property equivalent would behave been about £225 at the time!

I don't know about HB but you should certainly be entitled to quite a good amount of child tax credit and WFTC.

Helloooo
I';ve been trying to work out my £s for next year - going on maternity leave end of this year. But it's quite tricky! And how do the tax office know what tax credits to pay you as it's different for firs three months.
It's a real worry trying to work it out!
thanks. Whatever i get it's incredibly low because i have to pay a mortgage, even though somehow got to do this by myself and just do not know how i'm going to get by.

lunavix - have you spoken to anyone at the jobcentre? As a CM, 2/3 of your earnings are disregarded. I'm not sure the exact figures for someone claiming tax credits (as I'm still on IS and haven't been switched to TCs yet) but you could potentially earn up to approx £200 pw and still be entitled to a small amount of IS, which automatically means you qualify for full HB.
