I bought some Karamellsirup once thinking it might be like Golden Syrup. It was quite nice but it just wasn't the same!

oh, am v disappointed then. But have noticed that most golden syrup doesnt taste as good as Lyles anyway - maybe because it is beet not cane sugar?

As long as children would accept it for suet puds and pancakes, that would be OK!

Oh, I'm sorry if I've disappointed you! Maybe this one is the real thing. Am tempted to try.

I buy Zuckerruebensirup here which I think is really tasty. It's got a very strong flavour and wouldn't be suitable as a golden syrup substitute but it tastes lovely on dark bread.

Oh well, clearly I will be forced to do a tasting at work on Monday, before I decide how much to buy

I tried teh karamellsirup - it is golden syrup with ADDED FLAVOURINGS
As though golden syrup could be improved!

Will just have to have a trip to the big smoke (mch) to get Lyles, and look for pimms as well.

I got Rice Crispies too so I can finally make marshmallow crispies with dc

and ginger marmelade for dh - he developed a taste for it when we lived in UK.

I didn't get all that stuff at Pennymarkt though. It was from a very upmarket supermarket in Karlsruhe which I knew about but hadn't been to before as it's a bit out of the way. It was worth it though!

Our local supermarket is a 'Real' which is a pretty depressing place to shop. The only things going for it are that it is big and very near. The one I went to yesterday had poncey names for all the aisles like 'Windelweg', 'Naschplatz', Strada del Pasta' and so on...

I well remember the frustration of trying to find golden syrup or something to substitute for it. So many of our desserts and cake recipes require it, don't they? I didn't find any of them worked well, there's nothing with the same flavour/consistency. Now thankfully I have a shop nearby which imports it from the UK. It used to be difficult to get soft brown sugar too for baking. I could only get the hard crystals but it seems readily available now.

I have some golden syrup from Alnatura but haven't got round to using it yet. It looks like golden syrup though.

Dark brown sugar! I really miss that. With all the british families in munich, there must be a good food shop somewhere. Probably in Schwabing, which is the trendy posh place to live, and needless to say, where I never get to.
