Those of you who are non-res and need to do a UK tax return (and don't have an accountant!) - what software do you use to do online filing? If you are doing it on a Mac, even better!

Sorry to be boring...

We had a nightmare with tax due to coming back half way through the tax year, kids and me returning 6 months ahead of DH plus being given a bunch of shares whilst living in Asia (had to pay full tax on them to that country before they even vest). Thankfully DH's company provided consultants in Asia to figure out that tax, and another company in the UK to deal with the UK tax. A year after we returned it's just about sorted. And it wasn't too painful in the end re how much we had to pay :-)

Anwyay, I digress. Would the company you or DH work for provide some support?

We use Taxcalc - it's very simple after the first use!

Erm, first time round I did a paper one, second time round I just did it in the HMRC website's downloaded thing.

Is it self-assessment you're talking about?

I just do a paper one and do it myself. I am an accountant though

Sorry we use an accountant too, one who knows both systems. When we arrived we crossed a tax year so were told to do our SA as usual and give them all the figures then they worked out the tax from there. They save us more than enough money to pay them!

Do it on HMRC website

I didn't think you could do the online return if you're resident outside the uk. We're going to do the paper one.

We ve always done online, HMRC obviously aware that we are overseas. I actually thought you couldn't do the paper returns Wink

We do online and have done for 6 years.

It's so confusing. When I tried to do the online return (after going through the long process of registering) it said you could only do the online form if you were resident. Or you could download special software. I might try and ring hmrc to check but I guess it's easier said than done to get to speak to someone there.

When I went through it said as a non-res you can't file online, but gave a list of HMRC recommended software providers you could use. I don't think the non-res pages are on the HMRC online tax return so you can't do a full return in the same way as you would if you were in the UK. It maybe depends whether you have income arising in the two countries (which we do)? Anyway, as soon as I'd logged on it came up with a warning saying I couldn't file as a non-res, seemed pretty clear!

However, since doing a bit more research, it seems taxcalc works on a mac and is user-friendly, ÂŁ25 so not horribly expensive - especially if it makes it easier. We're not fiendishly complicated but we do have income coming from various sources and it did make it quite simple.

aaaah blinking phone posts are now appearing all over the shop! Thank you all for your responses Smile

raydown that's just what happened to me too! I would recommend tax calc, it asks you nice easy questions Wink pupsiecola glad you got sorted, we're only moving around the EU so it's not quite so bad, but salaries paid in two countries, rental income and share sales were quite enough for me!

Ah, yes, we may have downloaded some software to complete it, but definitely never used paper.
