School fees in Australia

rainbowmagic1974 · 15/06/2014 21:56

I'd love to move to Australia , half my family are already there! However, we have 3 children and from what I understand we would have to pay school fees for all of them whilst we only had temporary residency.
I'm really worried, this is going to make it financially impossible.
Any advice anybody has would be very welcome.

Agh! Going to? I think NSW, NT, and WA (from Jan 2015) charge 457 visa holders for education. In WA it's $4k for one child then less ($2-3k?) for the rest. And in our experience so far while primary is ok, secondary ain't worth it.

If you're not planning to stay then a private school might be cheaper, but if you are aiming at a permanent visa then you're stuck..

Its $4000 for the 1st then $2000 for each additional child on a 457 in WA from next Feb. This still may change though. If you live in catchment for a good high school/primary then the schools are fine. Catholic schools are cheaper the the 457 fee as far as I know. To be honest my haven't been too impressed with the behavior of the local private school kids when my son has come up against them at sports. in my opinion 7yr shouldn't be trash talking other teams.

I think the visa fees are changing this year as well, I believe it's individual costs now as opposed to a family one, so you'll need to pay for the kids.

I hope you've got plenty of money because it's bloody expensive here now.

Well you do pay it's still $600 a year in primary and $900 in secondary that you wouldn't have to find I'm the uk.
No way would I come to australia with kids without PR the only way the Aussies survive is with government top ups up to $120,000 a year.

From the parliament of Australia website

^Temporary workers do not have access to a range of government support available to Australian citizens and permanent residents, such as Centrelink payments and Medicare (unless reciprocal health agreements exist).

In addition, states and territories may charge fees for the children of workers on subclass 457 visas to attend public schools. New South Wales (NSW) charges $4,500 for kindergarten, $4,500 for junior high schooling and $5,500 for senior high schooling of subclass 457 visa holders. The Australian Capital Territory charges $9,320, $12,500 and $13,900 respectively, although subclass 457 visa holders can apply for an education fee waiver if they are involved in a job that appears on the Skilled Occupation Lists. In 2013, Western Australia announced a $4,000 per year public school tuition fee for children of subclass 457 visa holders but reports suggest this has been revised down to $2,000 for each additional child from the same family, with implementation postponed until 2015.

Subclass 457 visa holders in other states and the Northern Territory are exempt from international student fees, but may contribute minor administrative fees as do domestic students.^

The big question is, what are your skills and what kind of visa are you hoping to apply for?

I guess if his current job will pay him very well then go to Sydney if not it jobs are in high demand across aus, so you can choose a state without school fees if you don't want to pay them. Wink
