Congrats! Where will you live? Do you have any children - as for me this makes a difference. I agree with Salbertina's comments re package and depending on your situation short/long term.

My post sounded harsher than intended. Been here too long! It's summer and beautiful and keeps you on your toes!

Do not assume life will be cheap!

Where are you going to be?

South Africa or Southern Africa?

Where will you be? Agree with negotiating your package. It is expensive to live here but it is beautiful. Do you have children?

I have arrived! In fact I have been here over a month. Life is good, albeit hectic!
Work is good but totally mental.

The toddler turned 2 on Friday. Was v low key as DH is still in the Homeland with this job. It turns out that getting him a job and a work permit here may be v v v difficult. Fingers crossed he sorts himself out soon. Part time Single Mom was not on my wish list for 2014. Hats off to all you single mums - geez I do not know how you do it!

Anyone with tips on settling into a new country/SA/Jo'burg - please send them my way.

TTFN

Hope you don't mind me gatecrashing - we may be relocating to Jo'burg later this year.

All still up in the air, but heading over for a holiday in a few weeks to scope it out and see the likelihood of me getting a job etc.

Keeping an eye out for tips too!

Welcome to SA MindfulBear! I hope you are settling well. Any progress with getting your DH here? Have a look at //www.jozikids.co.za for ideas of things to do. I hope the winter isn't too harsh for you. It is hard without central heating!

Singaporeswing, I hope your research holiday goes well!

singapore hope your trip goes well. It really is a great place. Of course there are frustrations but the pros outweigh the cons so far albeit that at the back of my mind I know this is not our forever home as I dont want to stay here for secondary school for my DS (a long way off!!!)

It is a little chilly at night though right now and the houses are not built for it at all. Where is my insulations, my double glazed windows and my gas central heating? Actually right now I would settle for windows and doors that fitted properly and had no draughts billowing through the house!!!

Thanks for the welcome Meid. We are having a lovely time thank you!
Fourways Farmers Market tomorrow morning for brunch. Today DS was supposed to have a swimming lesson but we overslept - he had croup earlier in the week which was a little stressful so I was pleased we overslept tbh!!!!
