FIL has MS. What forward planning does MIL need to be doing?

FIL was diagnosed with MS about 8 years ago and has deteriorated fairly rapidly in that time. He's in his late 60's. He's now pretty much wheelchair bound, though can get up to a standing position and walk a few steps with his walker, most of the time. He's had bouts of incontinence too, so he is seriously affected by the MS now.

He recently had a nasty fall and banged his back. After a few days in hospital where they ascertained that nothing was broken, he was moved to a rehabilitation place to build his strength back up. He's been there for a couple of weeks and is due to return home next week.

DH and I are not sure how to support him and MIL best. I'm concerned that that their house is going to become unsuitable for him, and all their money will be swallowed up in care fees, though these concerns may be unfounded - I hope so!

They are fairly comfortably off, they own their house outright and have some savings in the form of shares, but not a huge amount. They've spent a fair amount converting their (upstairs ) bathroom into a wetroom, but what happens when he can't get up the stairs? He has a stair lift at present but I'd imagine there'll become a time when he can't get on and off it.

Will they have to pay for any of his care? What if he goes into a care home? Can MIL do anything with the house / savings to ensure it's protected?

I realise I'm probably sounding really grasping here. I'm not concerned about this from our point of view, more that MIL is looked after as realistically she'll probably outlive him.

I don't even know what I'm asking for really, I just want to make sure that they're not liable for huge care bills when a bit of forward planning could have avoided them. PIL don't have internet access and are fairly unworldly, so I don't want them to miss out.
