new job-no money

(30 Posts)

hi everyone first time here and first post .looking for a little advice and ideas how best to deal with this .i was previously claiming benefits and had them stopped as they said i wasnt looking for work i was and can prove this as i have been offered and accepted the job they wont have any of it though .any way dwp wont take back the sanction and im entitled to no money.the woman was very rude and somehow my tax credits got caught up in this and they was suspended to they gave me a 1 of payment last week of £69 and that has to last until i get my first wage from my new job on the 22nd i start on the 15th have been doing my training this week .
anyway i applied for a work wear grant and have been turned down on the basis im not claiming benefits it says i can appeal but dont see the point by the time that goes through i will have my wage im so worried now though they wont help at all.the dwp are saying im not entitled to anything .i have applied for child tax again the dwp are saying its because i have got a job now ive filled working tax forms in waiting to hear back of them.
im not sure about the food bank helping as they have helped me a lot since my money was sanctioned infact have helped more than what they should there only suppose to help 3 times in 2 month .so dont think i can go to them
the £69 has gone i had to get gas and electric, some food which has now run out .and bus fayre to and from work training as i wouldnt have had time to get there my nans minding my lo why i was attending the course i had to be there for 8-30.
so i need to get some work shoes i have none the one i have absolutely kill my feet to small i think .does any one no anywhere i can get some help with this i feel like the dwp are just being awkward and dont want to help me i have cried so much on the phone to them as i was looking for work now have a job so i feel like the sanction is unjustified tbh .i do get £20 a week in cben but im not sure if i still get it now im starting work have rung them to tell them about my job and they said i may need to reclaim with my new circumstances
any one have any ideas what i can im at a loss my family wont help at all and the only freind i could have asked is unable to help me xx

You should still get CB.

Get in touch with CAB urgently to get them to help you unravel this mess. And they might be able to put you in touch with a good organization that offers crisis loans (I don't mean payday loans).

my cb is payable tuesdays i got it last tuesday but i had to pay my tv licence as i was in arrears so maybe i will get it this week aswell will have to wait and see on that one .i rang them as i thought they needed to no hopefully it wont change anything then with that.
will be ringing the cab today .i have tried for payday loans but they want gurantors well numbers of people they can ring if i dont pay and i have bad credit so i cant have one of them.
someone said although the dwp have stopped the social fund my local council will give them out have rung them and they said this is untrue will try ringing cab again now tried before but it was busy
thanks for your reply x

Can you ring around friends/family or put a message on facebook asking if someone has suitable shoes they don't want anymore?

Your amount of tax credits would have changed, and you have to reapply when your circumstances change, which is what you have done. Ring them every morning to see where they are with your application, it should be backdated, and shouldn't take too long.

Good luck.

i have asked everyone i can think of will have another think if there is any one else .ive been keeping my eye on freecycle and places like that aswell.
yes i have done that straight away hoping it doesnt take to long the £69 theytold me was a final payment of that claim .will keep ringing them to see how far they are with it .
thankyou xx

Your child benefit will continue to be paid every Tues. So you will get that.
You may be able to apply for a budgeting loan from DWP, you should qualify if you had been receiving income support for a minimum of 6 mths.

wil it i was really worried it wouldnt so i should get the £20 next week then on tuesday
i rang for a budgeting loan form and from the 1st april they no longer do them so wouldnt send me a form out .they said they dont do crisis loans any more or anything x

hardlymychoice Thu 11-Apr-13 15:11:50

Yes the social fund has been stopped now, so no budgeting loan or crisis loan from the DWP. It's been replaced by a different system run by local authorities, so you'd need to contact your council to find out about it. I don't know why your council told you that it's untrue. I just looked up information for my council's new scheme and it is a bit more restrictive, you can't just download forms from their website and just send it in now, you need to apply via one of four local support groups, e.g. CAB which is really hard to get an appointment for.

There is quite a lot of back to work support - I got a benefit run-on and help with work clothes - but often the criteria is that you have to have been on IS or JSA, so I'm not sure how it works if you're being sanctioned. I'd still continue with the appeal, as anything you were entitled to will be calculated and backdated to when you were eligible, and you might need that to pay back any loan you need to get.

I'd still contact the food bank even if you've used them a lot already. They may be able to direct you to other support even if they can't help any more.

will ring them again then to see what they say maybe its such a new thing i dont no might get some one who nos more if i ring back.
ive been trying to get hold of cab all day everytime i ring its busy going to try first thing in the morning see if they have any appointments available or a drop in i could go to .
i rang the dwp when i got refused the grant and she said it would have been declined due to the sanction as im not actively claiming benefits due to the sanction i have no filled the appeal form in and told them why i think it should be awarded as i still see the sanction being unjustified.
thanks x

oh and the shoe situation i think i may have sorted it asked a old freind if she had any that icould use she thinks she has so shes going to dig them out tonight depending if there the right size she said i can have them so thats one thing less to worry about
got through to cab they have no appointments but have a drop in next tuesday i can attend going to try and go its open until 5 so i should be able to make it i think xx

Where are you based? I am in Hertfordshire, if you're local (ish) I could definitely help you out with clothes/shoes and food.

I can't believe that this government could allow someone to go without money to feed their kids and keep a home warm (at the very least).

I hate to see people struggle when they are so obviously trying to help themselves. Please email me: justine202@btinternet.com and let me know where you are.

hi im based in the northwest
i have emailed you as you said i could just to say thanks for the lovely offer

Ino i will get through this its just so hard at the moment been up all night trying to work out how and what to do for me and my son but i cant think of anything

xx

Get onto your MP. They will get onto DWP & tax credits for you & they will have to explain themselves! Had you missed some sign on times in order to be sanctioned?

RedHelenB Fri 12-Apr-13 17:26:08

Your child tax credits shouldn't be affected by whether or not you claim JSA though, it's down to income.

hi no i had forgotten my book one time and didnt have proof that i had job searched but me getting a job think thats the proof but they wont listen to reason i honestly dont think it can be justified sanctioning me .
the lady i spoke to said because i wa sstarting work and my money coming in would be different id have to do a new claim which is what i have done on the phone when i called the helpline explained and they just went through all the questions on the phone i was previously claiming the closed that claim and started this new one which im waiting to be processed called today and they said its still being looked at so will ring again monday and everyday until they do something

Yes I agree with second coming stay away from payday loans, provident and shopatec , the interest is rate is exorbitant, use the money you have for food and bus fares you cannot afford to pay their rates of interest.

Might be worth putting some notes through local doors in better off streets too to see if anyone needs babysitting or cleaning or other work. People do that around here and can get quite a good response and then you could earn a bit of spare money up until the job starts.

hardlymychoice Mon 15-Apr-13 20:34:25

I've just found out from my local CAB that budgeting loans are still available for those who are still on IS/JSA. Budgeting Loans will be replaced by Budgeting Advances for those on UC, but if you haven't been migrated to UC yet then you can still apply for budgeting loans. See here.

You're still in a tricky position though as you've been sanctioned, so not actually getting JSA right now, and you need to have been getting it for 26 weeks to be eligible for a budgeting loan. I think you'd need specialist help from a CAB or similar advice agency to work out your eligibility. It might be worth applying for a BL now, since it will probably be turned down at first but might get paid if you get your JSA reinstated and backpaid.

There is also another loan which has replaced the Crisis loan, which is not dependent on being on benefits, but that is the one which needs to be applied for through your council.

hi thanks for the replies my job started today so cant really look for jobs in the area to tide me over as when i finish work i get my ds from school thanks for the idea though.
been reading about all the payday loans and think its best to keep away but also they all credit check so i will probably be turned away
i am a 7 in shoes to the lady that asked and i needed some black flat shoes my freind thought she had some but she doesnt
i cant get a budgeting loan as i have started my job so therefore im no longer classed as receiving benefits or so i have been told by the dwp.
im going to the cab tommorow after work and picking ds up they have a drop in just hoping i get there in time.
have asked my local council about that but was told that its not in place yet wasnt sure what to say to them tbh dont really no what it was im meant to be asking for .
its going to be a hard week but i think its a case of put up and shut up things will work out in the end i guess
just got to keep possitive and be thankfull i have got a job
thankyou for all the replies hope i have answered everyone xx

Fingers crossed that your tax credits come through in the next couple of days, your bit of child benefit tomorrow, spend on food.
Really well done on your new job. You are doing brilliantly, under really tough circumstances, I bet your son is very proud of you.
Wishing you all the best.
