Hi,
My son rented a scooter in Rome 2 years ago. The police have sent 3 requests for ?100 to be paid,as a fine,or that they will take the matter to court. It is alleged that DS was riding in a bus-lane,which he denies, and therefore won't pay up. What is the likely outcome if he doesn't?

You'll need an Italian lawyer to answer that one.

You don't need any sort of lawyer - there is no reciprocal arrangement. They can't do anything - unfortunately neither do we bother for traffic violations on international number plates.

Thankyou both.

Don't worry about it. We got one a few years ago for something similar (also Italy), and ignored it, and have never heard anything since.

Though if he ever finds himself in Italy again you can't be sure he won't be arrested. Don't want to scare monger though.

They've actually got something on Google about this. Apparently you can find yourself blacklisted by all rental companies!

I read that the law was changing from 2013 so that motoring fines were border blind. Does anyone know if this is still going to happen, or was it just a proposal?
