How long does it take to get divorced & how much does it cost?

A straight forward divorce involving DC but where access is already agreed and has been in place for 2 years. There are no assets to divide.

I know it varies but I'm wondering about average time/ cost.

Mine took about 5 months. It was similar to yours. Access already sorted and no assets or money to sort out.

Oh and it cost about £400 as I didn't use a solicitor. I just got the forms from the court.

Thanks kayzr. It's for DP who's in a mess. I got divorced overseas and the system was very different. I'll look at the court stuff, thanks.

Depends on your circumstances. If you are eligible for "Legal Help" it may cost you nothing.

If you are not then the court issue fee is about £340.00, two hours of solicitor's advice roughly the same (in my area), decree absolute fee of £45.00. That's for a straightforward divorce where your spouse isn't being a difficult twat of course.

If you deal with it yourself you'll only have the court fees.

Mine was around £300 all in, but that was a few years ago. The Courts are really helpful with the forms, and I was told that the powers that be prefer people to DIY divorce rather than go through solicitors if at all possible. You can even swear your affidavit at the Court rather than pay a solicitor, as all Court employees are legally able to have affidavits sworn in front of them.

It took a while as I had to wait for the 2 year separation point, but once we were there it wa a couple of months between decree nisi and decree absolute.

With a solicitor doing it for you it would cost around £1200-1500 inclusive of vat and £400 court fees. That's what I usually give as an estimate.

I am on legal aid and my ex is the one petitioni ng against me, she has estimated the cost to be about 200pounds, but not sure if that include decree absolute or not to be honest. She has estimated 6 to 9 months as he is requesting contact, and nothing is yet in place and it will have to go through a contact centre for which in my area there is a waiting list. x
