Private gynae appointment questions!

Hi everyone, my DH and I have been ttc baby no.2 for 12 months. I have had day 21 tests which confirmed I am ovulating and we are just waiting on DHs SA results. My GP has referred me to see a gynaecologist to have further testing done, but the waiting list is 6 months before I can get an appointment. My DM has very kindly offered to pay for me to go and see a private gynaecologist, so I am just after some insight into how this will work and what the appointment will be like. Do I need to go through my GP to get an appointment? Does anyone have a rough idea how much it will cost? And will I get any scans/tests done at the initial appointment, or will it just be a Q and A type thing, and then have to pay more and have separate appointments for any tests? Thanks.

Hi - much depends on who you see/where you go. Not all tests can be carried out on same day as some may be dependent on your cycle. We self referred for private appointment but you can ask your gp to do it - contacting the gynae you wish to see ( their secretary) and ask what they will accept. A gp referral takes time - to see gp, for them to dictate letter and for it to be sent.

My gp refused an NHS appointment for secondary infertility as he said no treatment will be offered so other than initial SA and bloods our area does not find any appointment.

However, as my dh's SA results were significantly different to previous ones we are seeing urologist privately now. Cost for appointment is £200. However all other tests needed were done that day ( scan, bloods, detailed SA), we got an appointment within weeks of initial email and follow up apt in several weeks after first appointment. Medication was prescribed after first appointment!! Compared to NHS gynae that I saw it was x months to see a junior dr on rotation who ordered a few tests with a 4month wait to see her again. Saw different junior dr on 6m rotation who ordered more tests with a further 3 month wait to see a different dr ( consultant for 5 mins!). This went on for 13 months with our initial primary infertility. Am sure others have better experiences than I had. However this is what pushed us to private is time ( plus age). No holidays or major treats for 2yrs for us to fund these tests. But our choice to do this.

Should add that all tests ordered after initial appointment that could not be done that day did not incur another consultants fee until saw them with all test results.

Hi ,

Any private consultation needs not to be refered by the gp . All they do is send a copy of there diagnosis and a letter to your gp( legal compliance )that too I think on your consent . Intiall consultAtion costs around 200 to 250 pounds . And then follow ups and other scans etc . I think costs primarily depends upon clinic and doctor so varies a lot .
Yes when you fill up the forms they do ask for your medical insurance etc so carry that thing along if you have .

Best of luck
