Have I lost the ability to produce children ? :-(

Hello...

I'm looking for some advice, or more so stories and experience really ...

I have 2 healthy children, but had a MMC in Oct 2012 and then a complete MC in May 2013. Since the last one, my periods and ovulation haven't been as regular as they always were, albeit only slightly out of sync now, e.g. I would be ovulating maybe 4 days after the end of my period etc.

I'm not actively trying to get pregnant, however do monitor my periods and ovulation via a tracker (conscientious lady!!)

Anyway, had a few minor blips since my last period, in the sex sense, and have had unprotected whilst I've obviously been ovulation (or during my fertile days). The last sex was 4th Jan (just under a week ago) - I have very tender nipples at the moment so done a pregnancy test (strip one) yesterday, which showed negative. This made me slightly sad, as I'm now worrying that the MC's were a sign that I can no longer have children, and maybe my fertility has also now been affected ? I know this sounds crazy, but with my 2 children (planned pregnancies) I've become pregnant within a month or two.

Has anybody experienced MC's, and then found that they can no longer have children ? I understand I'm setting myself up here for negative responses, where people may have experienced this, but I'd rather know - I feel like my body has been telling me it's stopped working

I had what was referred to as secondary infertility - unexplained though my periods were all over the place and I had low progesterone at one test. Just conceived one baby easily then could not get pregnant - with fertility drugs I did eventually though only to miscarry. After 4 years ttc I got pregnant on a month when I wasn't taking anything. I carried that third pregnancy to term and though I have no desire to get pregnant again my periods are like clockwork these days; ovulation occurs (painfully) at day 14 and period on day 28: what I wouldn't have given for a little bit of this regularity and predictable ovulation 6 or 7 years ago!! Anyway my point is that ime fertility and cycles can be all over the place but I don't think that necessarily means that your days of being able to get pregnant are over - as suggested above: see a doctor and see what they say.

It's really difficult to know. Miscarriages are sadly common and with the chances of conceiving only ever being around 25%, it's completely possible that you have merely suffered devastating luck and the failure to get pregnant during one cycle is simply a reflection of the true odds. Getting pregnant quickly isn't a sign that you once were super fertile and now not getting pregnant means you're no longer fertile. I've had two dc and a couple of losses. One dc took 14 months of trying (and I was arguably younger and fitter then). Her brother took one night of half-hearted trying.

I probably wouldn't be too worried in your situation assuming you are still with the same partner as with previous children? Perhaps a blood test would put your mind at rest re ovulation? Are you thinking of trying again soon? I'd probably give it a few cycles of actively trying and then review but it depends on your age, how 'odd' you think your cycles might currently be.

I'm so sorry you've been through all that you have.

You should probably go to the doctors to get checked out. Had my son 12 yrs ago, 1 miscarriage 2 yrs later then nothing. Just went for my blood test this afternoon for ovulation surge check. I would honestly go to visit your GP because its heartbreaking and it takes a while for the test appointments to come through.
Big hugs

Diplopoda - What is an Ovulation Surge? Is that a test they carry out?

What were your results if you don't mind me asking? x

My cycles have been a little different after each pregnancy but I've always known that I'm ovulating and that it was just a 'new normal'.

Perhaps go along for a chat with your GP and get some basic preliminary tests done. If you're 30, your partner older and you have some history now of miscarriage and not conceiving, it's not unreasonable to ask for the basic checks as a starting point.

The other thing is, if your last unprotected sex was only a week ago, you are too early to definitively rule out pregnancy this month.

Showy - I think I will, thanks for that. I hesitated going to my GP as I believed that they would not test anything until after a third MC ? Hmm

Thankyou for your lovely messages x

Hi, sorry, I'm tired this evening and I couldn't remember the correct term - they test your progesterone levels on day 21 of your cycle , it should surge upwards if you are ovulating properly and that's all I could remember when I wrote it, even though I was just at the hospital! Thats what I mean by not waiting to go to the docs, my husbands test appointment came 6 weeks after the initial visit to the doc and then you are waiting for day 21 for your test, then I think it goes to a consultation and maybe more tests so you can see how the time goes by quite quickly.I havent had the result yet, should be thursday fingers crossed.
You are still at a young age too so that goes in your favour :)
