HSG Results - Blocked Left Tube & High Prolactin Levels (What are my chances?)

I had my HSG done an hour ago and was informed my left tube is fully blocked (most probably due to my adhesions from my appendix removal). The right one is fully open and the doctor does not feel this should cause major issues. I have some cramping and light bleeding, but other than this I feel fine.
I was also informed I have a Prolactin level double that of a normal one and have been put on Brompcriptine to help lower it.
I guess i am wondering what my chances are after this news more than anything else. :/ I did not really get clear answers as there is still more tests to be done, next week they will do sperm & mucus tests and the doctor said we will take things from there.

I had a HSG and was diagnosed with a blocked tube but by the time I had a laparoscopy it had unblocked, I also had a high prolactin level when I first started ttc, you haven't taken any sleeping tablets recently have you? I only ask as I read about a link and I had, and when they retested it was fine, think I had taken anti sickness meds too

Hello mawinter

Not really sure I can answer your question, but noticed no one else had replied and couldn't 'read and run' and leave you all alone.

The only similar experience I have had with what you are going through is that I also had a HSG last year and one tube was blocked. I then had a laparoscopy one month later and they cleared the tube and said all was normal. I can only assume that they are a lot more forceful during the lap as you are fully under so they were able to clear the blockage.

Have you been given any insight as to what is causing the high prolactin levels? I know that high prolactin occurs during breastfeeding which stops your periods so that your body can save it's resources for your current breastfeeding baby, so I assume your high levels mean you are having irregular length periods or not ovulating every cycle?

Personally, when I first got an infertility diagnosis, I was really stressed. But after having taken it in and now trying to work around it, I feel a lot better because I know what is going on rather than just wondering and being stressed every cycle. So what are your chances? I think much better once you know the problem! How long have your been TTC? Sounds like you are on the verge of getting some answers and you are in good hands.

I can understand your stress and the next week will probably feel like it is taking forever until you get some answers from your doc. Feel free to vent here in the meantime if me being a listening ear is any help!

My husband has been diagnosed with 100% abnormal sperm morphology and then I have been diagnosed with a low AMH on top of that. We have been through 4 failed IVF's, so I certainly know the pain that this journey can bring.

Feel free to PM me any time as I really find it helpful to talk to others who understand, and obviously you do too to be posting here :)

Hello Lauren83 and Shellster52,

We have been trying for a total of 3 years on and off now (many, many health obstacles during the way). I had come back off the pill again this September to try again and waited 54 long days for a period or ovulation to come and nothing happened, so my doctor jump started things again with some medication. My hormone levels were all out of whack and I had a cyst, which left the gyn to think was a result of the cyst. Due to this she wrote me off as failing to Ovulate and we were finally referred over to infertility this October. I had two cycles now where I have Ovulated, but my periods have been pretty much very short and barely there. My cycles have been 15 days, 24 and 26, the last two where I Ovulated. Meanwhile I had been complaining to her for 3 years straight about odd symptoms i was having along with a ton of breast pain and she did nothing, but give me some stupid herbal crap which did f*ck all, but leave my with a nasty stomach infection! I honestly thought for awhile I was in perimenopause!!! :/

...Now back on track from a little rant there.

I talked to the clinic doctor about clearing the tube and he said that the chances of an ectopic afterwards are so high that for now he would prefer to see where other tests lead us before recommending if we should treat the block or not.

I have not taken any other medications lately besides my normal, Esomeprazole, Multi Vitamin, L-Thyroxine and Magnesium.

All of this is very stressful indeed and with how everything has gone I am just waiting for the next set of bad news to come. :(

DH on the other hand is always Mr. Optimistic and it is driving me beyond mad!

Feel free to rant mawinter. I love to listen as it makes me feel not alone and know how soothing a good rant can be :)

Sounds like you are getting very thorough investigations now with your HSG, blood tests and the sperm/mucus test. After I got over the shock of our infertility diagnosis, it actually gave me some relief as it put an explanation to it every time my period arrived and stopped me being an inconsolable mess with the not knowing what was going wrong. Focusing on IVF now as this seems our only answer.

Hoping that you feel better once all your tests are over with and you get a 'plan of action' to cirumvent what is going wrong. My cycles are always very light and short too which concerns me as I know this is what happens as you head towards menopause so I hear what you are saying about being stressed about menopause. Some people seem to get pregnant straight away after stopping the pill and others seem to have irregular and whacky cycles for several months so I hope your symptoms are just a side effect of the pill and they settle down soon.

Let us know how you get on with your tests and follow up appointments :)

I've no experience with the blocked tubes but I did have high prolactin levels when I started ttc and was put on bromocriptine. It brought my prolactin levels down to within normal range very quickly, so I wouldn't worry too much about that side of things.

Well we finally got told what the suggested plan should be and it is ICSI. DH has severe male factor issues. :( We would not be able to start until May.
