Taking Clomid with a high FSH

I'm 38 and was prescribed Clomid a few weeks ago to start on day 2 or 3 of my December cycle. My FSH was 11.3 at the time. Anyway the clinic wanted me to have another blood test just before i started the Clomid. To my horror, my FSH came back at 20 last week! Iv'e been devastated. The clinic seemed quite dismissive and told me i'm menopausal. They just said to wait a couple of weeks for the consultant to get in touch with me to review my situation. I was thinking of taking the Clomid anyway with my next cycle. I don't know much about Clomid but from what iv'e read it makes the ovaries work harder by increasing FSH to stimulate follicles into releasing eggs. Obviously my FSH this cycle is already high so indicates that my ovaries are working as hard as they can anyway so Clomid would be of little benefit. But what about next cycle, my FSH might have come down to within a normal range. Would it be worth trying the Clomid ? Would it be dangerous to take it with a high FSH ?
