Infertility

How long to wait before going to GP?

Heya. My BF and I have recently stopped preventing (as opposed to actively trying for a baby). This is mostly to stop me going insane about TTC because I have a history of infertility. My ex-husband and I were TTC for about 3 years. For most of that time I wasn't getting periods and went to see a consultant about that and the first time I was told I was too fat, but a year later I went to see a different consultant who told me I have PCOS (although no cysts, but I struggle to lose weight and have a hairy chin :( so she based it on symptoms)

Anyway, when BF and I do get to the point of actively TTC, will they take the previous TTC into account, or will BF and I have to have been TTC for years?

I know it's my fertility not my ex husband's because he cheated on me and got the OW pregnant within a week.

Have you actually been tested for pcos? As a rule, you should only get concerned after 1 year of actively TTC.

I didn't know there was a test for it. Is it a recent thing? Not sure why consultant would have told me without doing the test. I think I'll pop in to the GP at some point then and ask for the test. It would be a weight off my mind to know for sure.

Hmm, ok I have a plan of what to do now then _ If my periods end up being weird I'll ask my GP to test for PCOS as that was never done before. I do have the letter from the consultant still that mentions PCOS in case they can't see it on my record.

At the moment though I have no idea if my periods are behaving. I came off the pill in June and I know it can take 6 months for hormones to get back to normal. So far I've had 2 periods, woo. One at the start of July and one a few weeks ago (wish I was over the moon about, weird I know but I've been worried they wouldn't come back)

Hi Whattherainknows

I was diagnosed with PCOS 10 years ago, I had put on weight, had got hairy lip and had had no periods for over a tear after coming off the pill.

They did blood tests and a scan which showed my ovaries were covered in cysts. I was put straight on Metformin (which I will have to take for life), I started to loose some weight (still struggle with it a bit now), the hair growth slowed down and my periods returned.

I started TTC nearly 3 years ago and when we both started to have tests to find out what was wrong it showed that I was ovulating naturally every month which I could not believe! This is down to diet, exercise but mainly the metformin.

I seeked help after we had been TTC for a year.

As Beetlebeetle says do not let them fob you off, if your gp comes back with the reason being your 'fat' (bl**dy cheek!) go to another gp and get a referrel to see a consultant about your PCOS.

Good luck :) x

Thanks! That's really good to know about metformin. I do sometimes get a pain in my side so maybe I have developed a cyst since they did an ultrasound. That was 6 years ago. I'll leave it a few more months so they can't say it's just me coming off the pill or something. And I'll go armed with that letter from the consultant :D
