Clomid success with unexplained infertility

My fc prescribed clomid as we've been ttc for 2 years. All tests (apart from dhs sa with slightly low morph) have come back clear.

I'm wondering whether people with unexplained infertility actually get pregnant on it? I always thought I was ovulating before I started it

Thanks guys

On the NICE guidelines, I've read that people should not be given clomid if you already ovulate. It does not increase your chances of getting pregnant. My fertility doctor said its a way to get people to go off and try for another 6 months without treatment as clomid is so cheap. I would ring them up if I was you and ask exactly why you have been prescribed clomid.

Someone could come along and say different but that's the view my clinic takes. We have been ttc for 2 years and just about to start iui. I am taking it as part of my iui but it has never been discussed as a stand alone option as I ovulate fine. We are the same as you dh has low morphology.
Good luck!

I would agree with HappilyMarried155; clomid should not be prescribed unless there is definitive proof you are not ovulating. Infact if you are ovulating regularly, clomid can have the reverse effect. Think you;'ve been fobbed off.

Semen analysis should always be repeated.

I would not also class you as unexplained as there appears to be possible male factor issues re morphology. That often is a cause of "unexplained". I would seek a second opinion and more up to date test results with regards to possible male factor problems. Unexplained is no diagnosis at all; all this means is that they have failed to find out what is wrong. Sometimes couples get told this when they have not been adequately investigated.

attila and happlily tbh you've only said what I was already thinking. I have already said this to fc hence her putting me forward for iui. I just had loads left and wondered if it was still worth taking.

Fc doesn't think morph is the issue (it was 3%) as dhs count was excellent. Really not sure whether to believe her though

Blind kitty that's exactly the same us, he said that as count was so high morphology would be ok. Who knows if that is the case though as I haven't got pregnant yet! Good luck with your future treatment x

Same boat. 3%, but a high count, and unexplained (secondary) infertility - over a year of perfectly timed, charting, preseed, the lot. Will also be prescribed Clomid if nothing happens in the next few months (just had HSG/lap and ovarian drilling) but I'm dubious about the Clomid too.

Good luck everyone!

I'm sure this not relevant and your question's been answered but my unexplained fertility has now been explained (to me at least) by wheat intolerance I didn't know I had. So just in case you're aware of anything like that in your family, it never occurred to me (but probably not relevant !)

Hi all
This is exactly the thread I wanted to start. My partner and I have been ttc, again definitely having enough sex, right timing bla bla, for just over a year but nothing. We've had every test going and nothing has come back as an issue. So I've just been prescribed 6 months of clomid, 50mg, basically yes they give it you to try before ivf which is obv a lot more invasive. The only reason why I'm giving it a go, even tho my docs can't explain why it should help as I already ovulate (according to prog results) is because theyve said their stats show them it has worked with women who already ovulate. About half the women last year that were prescribed it in my NHS trust area, about 140, got pregnant and many of them didn't have problems with ovulation. I've also read a lot online of women with unexplained infertility for whom it has worked. The only thing my docs surmise is that the drug might give your hormones a boost, gives your ovulating a kick... My prog results have never been fab, 2 results of 27, so just over the 25 benchmark, and often with clomid these results are boosted apparently, which may help to keep the baby if conception occurs. I've twice felt I've 'conceived' but then no bfp so I've wondered whether low prog hasn't been able to sustain the pregnancy. A lot of guess work yes, so I've just finished 1st month clomid, took it at night, no side effects except for bad chin spots which i don't usually get, and I had a day 12 scan yest which I get on the NHS for the first month on clomid, and there was a 20mm egg follicle there ready to pop... So I guess we'll see, will keep you informed. X

Hi BlindKitty
Just wanted to let you know that after my 2nd month of clomid, I upped the dose to 75mg from 50, I'm now pregnant! so despite my doubts I'm so glad I gave it a try even though I ovulate myself, it boosted my prog bloods big time and lengthened my cycle a couple of days to 27days, and voila!
Hope you're doing we'll xx
