Hi I have an refferal to the infertility clinic for thursday . We have been ttc for nearly 4 years, I am not / havent been ovulating and have had 4 periods in that time ( 2 of them with norethisterone ) . What should i expect from first appointment ? and does my partner have to attend ? thanks in advance for any answers. should add we have a daughter who is nearly 5.

Hi - sorry you find yourself going through this.

Not sure how typically my experience is, but at my first clinic appointment they did some basic tests (height, weight, I'd already had a few blood tests.). They also wanted a Chlamydia test, to know that my smear tests were up to date, that I'd had my rubella jab, and ordered a few more blood tests.

DH had to provide a sample, and they took it from there.

Best of luck for Thursday, hope it all goes OK.

Thanks ChairOfTheBored hope your treatment is going well , thanks for the info had scared my self with ideas of internal scans and lots of poking and prodding.
Dh is working on thursday unfortunatly :( only got appointment today at 7pm (they phoned )so he cant get time off , hopefully doesent delay things too much though.

Im actually quite excited now hopefully some light at the end of the tunnel , not quite sure which treatment options are available since we already have dd but it all sounds fairly straightforward (so far).

Thanks again

I went on my own, but the consultant seemed surprised DH wasn?t there (I?d have brought him if they?d said!). He?d already had his semen test through the doctors though. At my first appointment I had some more swabs and an appointment for a day 2 blood test. I was also told I?d be sent an appointment for an ultra sound (which I had a few weeks later) and an HSG (which I?m really struggling to get an appointment for ? you have to phone up on day 1 and every time I call up they?re all booked!).

It is straight forward, but rather slow, no-one tells you about the bits in the middle where you?re waiting for them to contact you again! Make sure you take a note book and write everything down, I found it a bit confusing remembering which test was which, and when I had to have each.

Good luck, in some ways it?s good to get started and hopefully be a step closer to the end Smile.

thanks birdie80 , think I will have to brave it alone as Dh cant get time off, didnt have great deal of notice though only 2 days.
I will get dh to make appointment for his gp just incase its needed.
I had a ultrasound last month and it was all clear everything looked normal and no cysts so hopefully that helps speed things up.

Mine suspects adenomyosis, but like you they're not sure. I'm sure you will be fine on your own. My follow up appointment is in 6 weeks and it came through quite quickly, so there is more time to organise for us both to be there! Good luck on Thursday! I will probably be phoning up for hsg appt tomorrow or Thursday so hopefully things will get moving again.

Hope you get Hsg appt soon the waiting is horrible so far and can only imagine it will get worse, Its took nearly 5 months to get an appointment at the clinic but its seemed much longer.
Good new about follow up appointment coming well in advance though means hopefully Dh can come too.
I am going between nerves and excitement .
I amso thankfull to have dd and feel terribly selfish feeling so down about all this , its heartbreaking though especialy when she asks for a little brother or sister she wants me to go buy one :) . Annoying thing is we concieved DD very quickly (within 2 months of ttc) so hadnt imagined we would have any trouble ttc this time round. Oh well onwards and upwards . Fingers crossed you manage to get Hsg appointment asap.

Good thing with HSG is that it can clear your tubes & some women get pregnant! We waited around for a long time trying to get tests/results & regret not being a bit more pushy. I wish I'd made a list of all the dates of tests & redults as I went along & asked how long results take & when could I expect my next consultant appointment.
Don't feel guilty likecherrycola for wanting a second, good luck with your treatment. X

I hope it goes well today likecherrycola (Kinks fan?!). I managed to get an appointment for my HSG next week, so I am simultaneously excited and terrified!

thanks birdie80 and Siri1 sorry for massive delay in replying have been without internet :(, It went really well he was lovely done some blood tests and will be starting clomid may/june. In mean time I am meant to be going to gp for norethisterone but my period has turned up today , bit of a shock as its be well over 2 1/2 years since my last "natural" one , no idea why now I started taking vitamin b12 tablets 4 days ago ,mainly as my dad and sister have b12 deficency and wanted to try them just incase , surely coincidental though ?? any thoughts anyone ?
yip kinks fan birdie80 what gave it away ;) how did your HSG go ?

HSG was a breeze Grin Waiting again for results, I might phone up tomorrow even though they said a week!

I've no idea about vitamin b12 - how strange, but good news. Good about the clomid too, and I'm glad your appointment went well. More waiting then!

Sorry to jump in ladies, but what was the HSG like Birdie?? I have one soon and I am a little nervous!!

Birdie80 · 26/03/2013 22:49

I was really nervous too, but I needn't have been, it didn't hurt at all. The whole thing took about 20 minutes and they put a speculum (?) in followed by the dye. I had to turn on my sides for the dye to go into the tubes and they did about 4 xrays. The dye was clear and really sticky, but it's only a tiny amount. It was a tiny bit crampy, but only like a very mild period pain - I think smears are much worse! It's slightly undignified, and the hospital dressing gowns have a tendancy to reveal your bum if you're not careful, bit it was fine for me.

Don't be nervous, the worst bit is the wait! When do you have to have it done?

Thanks Birdie :). I have read very mixed comments about pain etc, but then I think ultimately we do these tests to have a baby which will hurt a hell of a lot more!!!!! My not till 6th of May so a little while yet. Hope yours helps :)
