Hi there - sorry, don't know if I am posting this in the right place. Have just got my first lot of metformin since 2006. Am already panicing about the runs and was wondering if anyone has any good ideas as to how to avoid this? Also - any metformin advice at all?! Sorry but a bit at a loss as to who to ask and my doctor sent me away before I could get questions out. Not normally lost for words, believe me!!!

Hi. I've been on metformin for over two years now (diagnosed type 2 diabetic and PCOS), and take the maximum 3000mg a day; 2 tablets 3 times a day. My best advice is to always take it with food and avoid fatty/sugary foods. My stomach was a little bad for a few days initially but now I'm fine (just the odd bad stomach if I go on a mad binge!) :) good luck

Hi ive been on 2000mg of metformin for the last 6months now after stopping and starting this medication for a few years before because of the bad side effects.
I am on the slow release ones now, and there doesnt seem to be as many side effects. My biggest tip to you would be to work your dose up very very slowly. Start by taking half a tablet a day for a week, then increase it to one tablet a day for the next week and so on until your up to your maximum dose x

Thanks. I think I will either (a) start on half a tablet on Saturday and see how I go over the weekend or (b) start a week on Saturday when it's half term.... shall see how I feel on Saturday morning and whether I can brave spending the day by my loo....!!!!! xx
