Feeling devastated after ectopic and now dh has vvv low sperm

Sitting here sobbing and don't really know what to do.

Ttc #2 for 1.5 yrs. had an ectopic in march 2012. Dh has been very ill and has been on meds since August 2012. He went for a sperm test and we just got the results... Total sperm count of 0.25mill/specimen which is nothing. Too few sperm to do any of the other tests. Dr said we won't get pregnant naturally.

I feel broken. We are so so grateful for our little one and it does ease this a little but I just don't know what to do now. We both really want a sibling for ds.

Could this low sperm count be caused by just medication? He's got me pregnant twice before he was on the drugs so I am wondering if he came off them in the future if there might be the chance of another baby or if our chances are over. I think there are even too few for assisted conception....

Can anyone help?

Hi berries, I'm so sorry for your loss and what you're going through. I'm not sure I can offer too much advice but didn't want to read and run. I do though know that sperm counts can vary wildly and definitely can be affected by ill health and medication and - when you get a result like this - tests need to be repeated every few months to be certain what's going on. Obviously it depends on his condition, drugs, etc, but in many cases it could well recover. What did the dr say when giving the results?

Also, if it comes to it, there are options for surgical sperm recovery for assisted conception which you may be able to explore. But hopefully you won't come to that.

Look after yourself and good luck.

Hi berries, I could have written youre post (except for the illness bit).

I got married, tried for 8 months to conceive and fell pregnant - we were ecstatic! but it was an ectopic, which ruptured and lost me a tube. We carried on trying for another 2 years and started at the fertility clinic just to be on the safe side. Due to the previous pregnancy it never occurred to either of us that my DH's results wouldn't be perfect, but they were far from it, Same as yourself. Each time they were repeated we thought they'd be ok but they weren't. Even IVF wasn't an option and our GP told us to look at donor sperm. The devastation I felt that morning I will never forget and my heart goes out to you.

However, GP's cant know everything and it turned out we were suitable for IVF with ICSI, a few attempts later and I have a beautiful DS, who is peacefully napping. I hope you too have some luck and I really feel for you today. Sobbing is definitely allowed.

thanks for replying ladies

high - When he gave him the results the doctor said "good news, they're all fine" and it was only when dh went home and used dr google he realised they werent. Went back to the gp who said "oh yes, I read it wrong. Youre actually infertile". The GP is totally shite. He said when my day 21 tests come back he will refer us as a couple for fertility tests but it's a long wait and as we have ds he doesn't know if we can be helpe on nhs.

Dr did say we should repeat the test in 6 weeks. Dh Is teetotal, d

Dh is going to see his consultant in a couple of weeks (the one who told him his meds wouldn't affect sperm) so will ask about coming off meds etc then.

Oops, pressed post too soon.

Dh is teetotal, non smoker, eats healthy, has very quick showers so I am not sure lifestyle changes would help but I will ask him to try them anyway.

Aside from that I might ring a fertility clinic to see if we have any options...

foxes thanks for posting. Congrats on your ds. I wonder how your dh got you pregnant naturally for the ep as did mine.... Thanks for posting your lovely story. I am so grateful for my ds. I don't know much about icsi and ivf yet but have a feelin I will be finding out more.
