Will have to do a link on next message, but thought this might be useful to some, but don't want to scare/offend anyone...

Awful whenever a child dies, but like this even worse .

I have a vague recollection that there was some sort of hygiene scare a couple of years ago, about formula powder either being used beyond its use-by date, or from cans that had been left open for too long. I think it may have been some rare form of botulism that had somehow contaminated some cans?

More information in newspaper today, apparently the bug is in all formula milk all the time, but is only dangerous to premmies or compromised immune systems. 47 deaths in 50 years, all premmies.

Can't believe if they've know about it for 50 years the neonatal units continued to not use premixed formula when it became available. Also can't believe there is no human milk bank for prem babies. I would certainly have donated if I had known this. Seems like the formula companies will make more money out of the hospitals for premix instead of the hospitals looking at other solutions.

There is a milk bank based at Birmingham Women's Hospital that will gladly take breastmilk donations from those in the West Midlands area. The service is great, they provide equipment and collect your frozen milk, even if you can only express small amounts at a time, as prem babies only need tiny amounts each day.
