Sven Goran Ericksson/Faria Alam

Must say that I sickened by this story. The FA secretary appears to be a self absorbed hedonist, and Sven is completely immoral. How can he justify his affair by saying he was single - he was living with someone at the time for goodness sake! And the fact that Faria is all over the papers today with the lurid details of their sneaking around is reprehensible. I am not a huge fan of Nancy Del Olio (or whatever her name is), but the scale of private betrayal and public humiliation for her is breathtaking. "We romped as he spoke to Nancy on the phone", "they haven't had any sex for a year" and "she's mad and looks like a drag queen"??? FFS!! I feel sorry for Nancy, and can't believe that these other two are so eager to share their complete lack of integrity with the world. Just had to get that off my chest!

If the story sickens you, why read it? I haven't and have no interest in it whatsoever.

Freckle - first, it is almost impossible to avoid this story if you look at a newspaper or watch the news on telly. And secondly, some of the most raw and agonising posts on Mumsnet involve women being betrayed by the men they love. I can't imagine being publicly humiliated in this way, and equally don't understand how a couple would flaunt/brag about their deception so openly in the media.

I understand about the women on Mumsnet, but that wasn't really my point. Papers only pay for these stories because they think more people will buy them to read about it. If people voted with their pockets and didn't buy the papers, then there wouldn't be a market for all this kiss-and-tell. And it's not just a question of not being able to avoid it. Just because it's in your normal paper, it doesn't mean you have to read it. It was clear from Earlybird's post that she had read it in great detail as she quoted from it. It might well be in my normal Sunday paper, but I won't be reading about it.

I hadn't heard anything about SGE speaking to the papers about the issue. I thought in any event it was just the secretary.

At least this time round the media haven't been trying to blame Nancy the way they tried to make out that Victoria Beckham was in some way at fault.

Agree with what you say Freckle about not blaming Nancy as they did with Victoria Beckham and I think that's a good point. FWIW, I have newspapers delivered by standing arrangement, so don't buy based on sensationalist stories/headlines. Also, because the story is so sordid, I don't actually have any interest in reading the stories I quoted from - those were simply the headlines on the inside pages (a Sunday tabloid, I grant you ). It goes without saying that the editors have probably chosen to highlight the most lurid bits from the interview. Doesn't make me want to read more about the comings/goings of these people - but clearly the media thinks there is a big market for it as it's been on the front pages, the inside pages, the editorial pages and the sports pages for almost 2 weeks now. It would be logical to think that the two involved would want the media circus to die down, but it seems that she, at least, has decided to capitalise on (and profit from) her notoriety.

She has spectacularly bad taste in men.

Then perhaps the way to go is to write to the editor of your paper saying that you are disgusted with the coverage given to this non-story and that you will stop buying their rag as a result. Whether you do stop buying it or not is up to you. If enough people write, maybe the editor will take notice and stop buying such rubbish.

I bought the Mail on Sunday today. Np partic reason for doing so except I knew I was going to have a spare half hour on my hands.

The worst story in it, imo, was something like 'they are going to earn millions from the nike logo - and I only got $35' WHat a misleading headline that was. Turned out the woman had done it when she was struggling and the chap who owns Nike was just setting it up - also broke. He has since, apparently, given her shares etc. And she's very happy with how tings turned out. FFS.

Yawn
Nancy will amke more out this than anyone ffs she is a lawyer!

Freckle · 09/08/2004 07:33

Sorry, I don't understand. Why does Nancy being a lawyer mean that she will make more money out of this than anyone?

so what he had an affair, poor nancy but why do we need to know about it? It has got nothing at all to do with his management/coaching skills. If the media want an excuse to get rid of him I think they need to work harder than that tbh and I am fed up of hearing about this kind of thing

Totally agree Fio. This has no place in the news imo.

it does seem rather disingenuous to regularly buy the sunday red tops yet simultaneously complain that they carry sordid 'kiss and tell' stories. What do you expect? you might as well go to a pub and then complain about finding alcohol on the premises!

spoke to a friend at the weekend who's a distant cousin of faria, who says she's a perfectly nice woman, but seeing as she was being done over by the papers, it was probably ok for her to kick back. v sordid though.
and hated the way palios affair was reported as ok, because he's single..i read in another report that he has 5 young children..
