constipation and poo smearing

Jimjams · 22/07/2004 21:19

DS1 has been constipated the last couple of days. This means he has decided to stand up and poo on the floor (when I'm not there). He then smears it everywhere (I think just trying to get rid of it rather than for sensory reasons).

Anyway I need constipation cures urgently- am trying to make sure he drinks plenty- anything else? He won't take tablets and his diet is appalling (won't eat any fruit or veg at the moment) so it would need to be liquid- or something that can be sneaked into a drink.

cut back on chocolate and processed foods may help try fruit smoothies ?

Report
Jimjams · 22/07/2004 21:27

he won't drink smoothies unfortunately.... Doesn't eat much processed food as he's gluten free. Doesn't eat much to be honest so am a bit limited on what I can do diet wise. Does chocolate constipate? He has had more than usual this week.

Chocolate can have that effect on some people - on a practical side can you put some tissue for him to use and perhaps prevent some of the smearing I am at a loss of other ways perhaps as yorkie girl suggested lactolose may be your best option

He wouldn't understand about the tissue gothicmania. He puts tissues down the toilet (actually whole toilet rolls) but doesn't realise he's meant to do something with them first.

Actually I have some fybergy stuff in the house (similar to fybergel) but I think it may contain gluten... will check. Thanks for the ideas.

thanks for the list twiglett- maybe I should ring his nutritionist..... need to talk to him soon anyway. (Every phone call ends up costing about 80 quid so I tend to avoid it! )

on a completly different thing I like the idea of gothic mania (your 9.39 post) - Have you tried (sorry I don't know if he likes to be touched) rubbing his tummy in slow circular movements this can work by helping muscles relax

ROFL twiglett. She must have a recipe.....And some measuring cups she could sell me (actually I use those daily!) I could try a friend of Barbara's I know- she has a lot of experience with constipation and poo smearing...... That's a good idea may go and eamil her now.

`OMG I've always thought of you as gothicmania! ROFL.

Good idea about tummy rubbing- he loves being massaged- does it have to be in a certain direction. Are there any oils that would help? Someone once told me to rub the calves and I do that a lot as well!

I have just been sat here trying to work it out and Twigglett has got there first I use baby moisturiser for dd cause of her skin but oil sounds nice. If you rub his calves it is best to stroke upwards towards the heart

jimjams - i don't know how old your ds is, but i had a similar problem with my son when he was around 3-4. Basically, he became constipated, as a result of which he wouldn't eat properly, so became more constipated, then loads of poo all at once and all over the place! Lactulose worked for us but it took about 6 weeks to really sort him, and get his diet back to normal. he's now a really healthy eater, but I wish i'd tried it earlier. I was told that you need to try it for longer than a few days to really establish a new pattern. Good luck - i found it so stressful, i really sympathise.

I always think olive oil makes them smell like roast chickens Maybe its just me. I think I have some hemp oil somewhere I should try that- it's good for omega 3's as well.

Do people do child massage? I've always thought its something ds1 might like, whether it could ever work I don't know but if someone was happy to get to know him first it might do. His SALT often squeezes his hands to calm him down and now he offers his hands to her.

is this a problem that some boys tend to get at around this age group?

spare time!!! you comedian :-) Actually since I'm up the duff with number 3 maybe I should just treat myself to a book.

Not sure johno but I wouldn't use ds1 as a typical example of a 5 year old. His bowels are a mess and his diet is dreadful.

Lactulose will work, and it increases the amount of bacteria in the gut, making the stool softer, but it does take a little while to work.

The sugar in it is not metabolised or absorbed by the person taking it (we lack the enzyme for it's digestion ) so your ds wouldn't be absorbing it, it just transits in the bowel, until it gets to the bacteria who use it as a food source and multipy.

It is good, but it does take time. I would advise you to start it asap, we had this problem with dd (but without the smearing). I made the mistake of increasing the amount of friut etc, hoping that this would sot it, it had no effect (her diest was already good) and she ended up with a psycholigical prolem, and wouldn't poo, even though her stools were soft.

Hope that things imporove soon

have you tried fish oil? it helps lubricate and so poo slips out easier (excuse the choice of words!!!)...also makes it very easy and clean to wipe afterwards
