:( why are piers so plagued by fire? Far too many of them set alight. Is all the wooden decking a target for arsonists or just bad luck?

Ah that's a shame, reminds me of when Weston Super Mare pier went up - it did get rebuilt bigger and better though, so it might not be all over for Eastbourne. Shame for the kids/parents though on hols now.

The two nearest towns with piers - Brighton and Hastings - have both had piers burnt down in recent years (Brighton used to have two).

IIRC they were both arson? I'd bet this is too :(

I saw this on Twitter, such a shame. The cause could be anything.

There's something really awful about seeing pier fires

Sounds like a fire started in the amusement arcade in some wood paneling. So maybe an electric cable overheated?

Oh no Sad.

Brighton Pier was awful - it's now all fallen into the sea pretty much - but then it was derelict to start with. WSM pier was rebuilt so hopefully this one will be too.

I read a comment someone had posted on Twitter yesterday or Wednesday and it made me think it was arson.

So so sad and what a pathetic person to do this should it be true.

AllotmentQueen Brighton Pier was just about to be restored, and turned into a kind of posh pier. (Restaurant and ballroom dancing or something like that IIRC).

Itsfab I don't think it was arson after all. I've heard it was faulty cabling on a machine in the arcades. (No idea if that's reliable though, it's just what I've heard.)

But anyway, 3pm in the afternoon on a summer's day would be an odd time to start a fire on the pier don't you think? Eastbourne Pier, and the arcade in particular would have been packed with people. Arsonists much more likely to strike in secret e.g. at night, don't you think?

Today it has been reported a lot that police suspect arson.

Arson is not normal so no, the time of day is irrelevant to me. If someone wants to do it they won't look at the clock first I wouldn't think.
