Has anyone seen the news reports aout the 12yos in America who took a friend into the woods and in a premeditated attack stabbed her several times and left her for dead?

CNN report

Its really struck me. I find it so hard to comprehend that 12yo girls could do such an awful thing. To plan it and to appparantly feel no remorse about it is awful.

But I also feel sorry for the attackers. They're going to be tried as adults which I can't get my head round and are facing 65 years in jail. There's photos of them in court shackled in chains. I've got a 13yo dd and my heart breaks for all the families.

There's some crazy back story that the two attackers believed in the Slender Man and wanted to kill their friend to prove the slender man exisisted, that they'd blame the attack on him. So either they've got unbelievably carried away in a ghost story or they're mentally ill.

I read they had been planning it for a while. It's beyond comprehension. They sound really young in that the idea was to impress this slender man and then run away to live with him.

One of them drew a picture of this slender man and her dad (innocently) put it on Facebook because he thought it was cute.

Just awful isn't it. I have played some Slender Man game on the computer before which consisted of running around a wood in the dark with a slender man chasing you and if he catches you he stabs you. Must admit it was a it of a freaky game and not something I'd let dd play.

The creepypasta.com website's running a charity fundraiser for the victim's medical costs as well as for the SafeHorizon project, if anyone wants to contribute - although the Slenderman legend didn't originate there, it's the main hub for SM and other prevalent creepy internet legends. The incident's really shaken the community, as you can imagine.

"Slenderman" was just an attempt to create a myth or piece of folklore from scratch and see how far it went. It became so popular as it has elements from lots of actual fairy/ghost stories and is fairly generic. From a mythological point of view it's actually really interesting how something like this can take off and spread-however, and key to this attack, which is of course incredibly sad, is that it is completely and utterly innocent. No more sinister than any other bogeyman story. It's a little bit up in the air as to whether or not this kind of thing is suitable for children, of course. Young children definitely not, but 12? At that age they really should be able to tell the difference between fact and fiction. As for trying them as adults, that's something i believe is fundamentally wrong anyway. It seems to me that children who commit the worst crimes need the most support, not to have that taken away from them :(
