"Poppygeddon - or why I learned to shut up and love the Armed Forces". Parte The Seconde

A follow-on from here.

In this thread we hope to learn:

How Marxism will feed the world and deliver a lovely-wovely pleasure-dome of joy this time, for sure, definitely, no problem;

How WW1 was actually the same as WW2 if you don't read any history;

Why respect for the sacrifice made by members of the armed forces is basically the same as setting fire to people in Afghanistan;

How it's possible to reach voting age without knowing ANYTHING AT ALL ABOUT THE WORLD.

I bet you were dying to do this. Tapping impatiently on your keyboard, hoping that the thread would reach the 1000 mark...

Aha! Found you!
Marking my place so I don't miss any more of geckos incredible teachings...
Also I went to bed pretty early last night...how/when did it get pro-UKIP?!

Report
TwitTwooShoe · 03/11/2013 11:24

I don't get the whole UKIP thing Confused At the end it seemed like if you didn't think Marxism could realistically work, then you'd be a UKIP supporter. I'm neither Hmm

it sounds as though there is no respectable reason to not wear a poppy- it that correct?

Claig has very strong views on the subject.

Heehee. No, it was just chance. I had been watching a film on the tellybox and gave up because I was too tired, came upstairs to switch the computer off, added a post to the last thread and got told it was locked to further posts. Seemed a shame not to open another one.

chibi I think it's more that there's no respectable reason to force not/wearing it on anyone, but if you want to say why, don't be offensive about it. Or something.

i just read the OP and was unsure- it seemed that only marxists who know nothing about history or the world could possibly choose to not wear a poppy.

why no assume that people who hold different opinions to you do so in good faith, and not because they are too stupid to grasp how wrong they are?

Oh because the person who started the thread from which this one stems WAS too stupid to understand.
There's a link in this OP. It's an amusing read

Can I add that I hope to learn why it's ok to go to war of there is a possibility that maybe one day in the future Britain might be invaded (WW2) but when British territory is actually invaded it is wrong to go to war (Faulklands).

Although according to a different argument of Geckos we should have just given up, say, Wales to Hitler and told anyone who wants to be British to just move to England or Scotland.

'Why respect for the sacrifice made by members of the armed forces is basically the same as setting fire to people in Afghanistan.'

OP (or anyone else???) I have no clue as to the thread referred to in OP's post at head of thread - but I do know that I find the above immensly offensive. Can someone please tell me if maybe it was meant to be 'sardonic' or a 'joke'?

The British Legion spends over £200,000 EVERY DAY supporting Ex Servicemen and Women on everything from helping soldiers get the correct compensation; sending families on breaks they could otherwise not afford; to having 6 homes across the Country - 2 of which are wholly directed to meeting the needs of those with dementia; to a free 'handyman' service for both veterans and veterans spouses.

They actively challenge government policy when 'wrongs' need to be corrected vis what support our military subseqently might initially be 'provided with'.

I hope someone DOES answer my Q. at top? But if honest, no matter how it was 'meant', it IS offensive to the core. Poppy sales directly fund the wellbeing of the very soldiers who fought in WW2, and whose actions have gifted you/me/all of use to exercise the free speech (& much more besides) that we, often very 'unthinkingly' both have and enjoy.

You do NOT need to be a 'war-mongering supporter' to still want to support the life-long care of those who went to war on our behalf. And if you don't want to wear a Poppy that's cool... but inferring that those who do respect the sacrifices (IE made by the very people that gifted you the freedom to write the above) our forefathers made is very definitely NOT remotely ok. It is - even if it was written in a 'sardonic/funny' way that has escaped me??? - pretty vile TBH.

Have a look at the link on the OP.

I can assure you, it's a joke it this context, and a reaction to another poster who believes it.

I gave up with that other thread, it hurt my head from banging it against the wall so often and I feared my iPad would get thrown out of the window!

Yeah, that's probably not helping.

- but I do know that I find the above immensly offensive.

Here's some news for you. You don't have the right NOT to be offended by something.

Can someone please tell me if maybe it was meant to be 'sardonic' or a 'joke'?

Read the 1,000 post thread linked to in my first post, and get over yourself.

AmGrowingAnAwesomeTree the RBL don't just help soldiers, they help members of all 3 of our Armed Forces. I'm sorry but it pisses me off that everyone classes the military as 'soldiers'. My husband is in the Armed Forces, he is not a soldier, he is an airman!

AGAAT- look at the thread. It was a sarcastic joke against a poster who holds those views, and most people here support your argument.
