Prosecution for spitting in public?

Two men in Waltham Forest have been prosecuted for spitting in the street after failing to pay an on the spot fine Telegraph. They were each fined £300 in their absence.

Spitting in public is disgusting but isn't charging people £80 for gobbing in the street a bit much?

DaleyBump Sun 29-Sep-13 00:51:56

*to spit

DaleyBump Sun 29-Sep-13 00:51:40

I've been spat on. The guy didn't mean tospit on me but just mumbled "sorry hen" and sauntered off, leaving me to attempt to clean the glob of spit off my knee. Dirty bastard.

NiceTabard Sun 29-Sep-13 00:18:16

Spitting spreads disease especially TB and so is a public health concern, as well as being foul.

My worst spits =

A bloke at a bus stop - I was walking towards it and he spat a huge flob really hard at the plastic between us - so basically it was coming right at my face and at made a loud noise when it hit and then slid down. Gross.

Have had a few teens spit and it just missed my foot.

It is fucking grim and vile and I hate it.

Crikey, worse than I realised then!! I obviously need to move somewhere more foul to broaden my horizons!

I actually live in Waltham Forest and it's quite a problem so well done WF council for trying to put a stop to this filthy practice.

I live near a college and often when doing the school run have to navigate a river of gob from the college kids as well as numerous chicken takeaway boxes. I like TheCrack's taser method, that'll sort the fuckers out

MrsDavidBowie Fri 27-Sep-13 18:03:17

Disgusting thing to do.
There are signs up at my gym telling people not to spit in the shower or steam room( gross)

...one of the guys done for spitting "no angel" according to his gran- is now up for armed robbery

When I was a little girl on the way to school (in the 1950s) I used to have to hop over gobs, and dodge them like they were a blasted hopscotch grill. Vile, especially as it was a time before the clean air act and the gobs were often vomit green.

Then it seemed to stop for decades. Now it's started again. Why? Because the dirty buggers think they are entitled to paint the tarmac with their filth.

I like watching sport on TV, especially cricket. The men are serial spitters. Ugh! Funnily enough I have yet to see the women cricketers spitting. Do men have an inability to swallow saliva? Can't think of a biological reason why, so it seems to be simply a case of yobbery.

TheCrackFox Fri 27-Sep-13 15:50:38

Great news.

Hope they introduce it in Edinburgh - I see dozens of men gobbing everyday (never women). I think £300 is fair enough but if I had my way I would tazer them in the nuts too.

Brilliant! Wish the had more officials to fine more people. I'm not in London anymore, but when I lived there, the amount of spitting one saw day to day was hideous.

If they could just bring in more enforcement officers for dog shit, litter etc, I'd be even happier.

Flowerybitch Fri 27-Sep-13 15:42:13

I think this is an excellent idea!! Dirty Buggers!!

comingalongnicely Fri 27-Sep-13 15:38:14

Interesting, they'll need hundreds of officials to book everyone running the London Marathon, any fun run, any half marathon, any cycling event then. The cash should come rolling in! Enough for spitoons on every street corner!!

I wonder how many millilitres of saliva will count? Can a small toddler produce enough to get booked, they spray the stuff everywhere, grotty little creatures!! Fine their evil parents!!

What about spilling coffee, coke, baby milk etc? That'a s liquid too & in the time it takes to evaporate it's litter!!

Surely the hygiene aspect only counts if you're crawling through it? In which case you're probably about to upchuck your kebab (an offence that no one has ever been fined for!!)

I don't know where you lot live, but I could probably count on one hand the number of times I've seen someone goz in the street in front of me. On the other had, I've been guilty of spitting on the odd dead badger lying in the gutter as I run along a country road on a hot & dusty day - will the council 'copter be hovering above me & dart me??

Appointing small men with big hats to dish out on the spot fines strikes me as a tad wasteful & I'd rather they dealt with something a little more useful TBH, such as the real litter that tends to be all over the place, or the aforementioned upchucked kebabs that tend to lurk on the highstreet until the pigeons have eaten them....

AdventureTed Thu 26-Sep-13 15:56:37

Great news. Dirty beggars.

SilverApples Thu 26-Sep-13 14:19:29

Good idea, if you don't want to be fined £80, then don't gob on the street.
Uncomplicated.
I'd like the same for littering.

SilverOldie Thu 26-Sep-13 14:12:30

Makes sense to me, spitting is vile and disgusting.

Abra1d Thu 26-Sep-13 13:27:31

I wish they would fine more people who litter. Or catch them doing it. Every now and then I go up and down our lane with black bags to pick up bottles and cans and fast food packaging. Sometimes I can barely carry them back up the hill. That's just a half-mile stretch. Why the hell do I and my other neighbours have to clear up after the slobs in cars who throw rubbish out of their windows? The local authority seems to have given up on the attempt.

edam Thu 26-Sep-13 13:26:18

Well done that council. Now could we get the FA to tell footballers to stop their disgusting habit of spitting? It is a bad example to set to children who worship footballers.

HopALongOn Thu 26-Sep-13 13:24:50

People who litter and leave dog mess around get fined as well. It's not a waste of resources.

If we're talking about funding, surely lots of £80 fines are a good income stream?

AbiJen Thu 26-Sep-13 12:21:58

Waste of council resources...

what about people who let their kids wee in public, and then how about dog walkers who bag up dog mess and leave it by the side... then you get people littering... yes, I think it's OTT

I think the councils are making so many cut backs, they're abusing the system and fining people for idiotic things, and then surprise, surprise, the wannabe tabloid, The Telegraph reports it. However, it is in London, and we all know London is struggling with poverty and not enough housing. That Google bloke wanting a £2million house can't find one to suit... boo hoo.
Then the £50 million facelift to Victoria Station.
Someone's got to fund that. GMP just lost 400 police officers.

DaleyBump Thu 26-Sep-13 10:35:57

It's absolutely filthy. Fine them more.

slug Thu 26-Sep-13 10:28:31

TB is on the rise again. Spitting is one of the ways it is spread.

SuperiorCat Thu 26-Sep-13 10:24:53

YY rub their noses in it. Disgusting

coffeeinbed Thu 26-Sep-13 10:24:10

No, it's far too mild a fine I think.
Ought to be more.
And make them clean their mess.

TheHammaconda Thu 26-Sep-13 10:21:35

I like the idea of making spitters lick the pavement clean though smile

TheHammaconda Thu 26-Sep-13 10:20:47

I agree, it's disgusting, unhygienic and antisocial but £80 is excessive for spitting.

HopALongOn Thu 26-Sep-13 09:39:35

Nope, it's dirty and nasty. If I was in charge I would be trying to force people to lick it back up. Disgusting. Get a tissue.
