Have heard on news that hurricane Rita has gained strength to match that of Katrina.

Just wondering - is it the norm to have two hurricanes in such a short space of thime in the same region??

It is headed for Texas apparently, though could cahnge course and get New Orleans.

apparently there are LOTS of hurricanes/tropical storms this time of year in america...we just hear of the bad ones

At least if it hits New Orleans again there won't be many folk there to devastate!

Don't remind me about bird flu - is there really a risk of it getting out of control and killing everyone?

Katrina, L, M, N, O, P, Q, Rita - so in fact since Katrina they've had six other hurricanes that have barely rated a mention on our news. Not only is it hurricane season right now, but we are approaching the peak of a 30-40 year cycle of hurricanes. It can only get worse for the time being.

I was actually wondering about the weather out there....Do ya'll get really bad storms often?

Report
Nightynight · 21/09/2005 18:15

No! not on the scale that you get them anyway.

If someones garage roof gets blown off, its on the front page of the national newspapers for several days.

It doesn't look like we will get a direct hit this time. It is headed for Texas, The families who have evacuated TO Texas have to evacuate FROM Texas now, really sad. We do usually get hurricanes back to back in the gulf areas, not all of them are as devastating as Katrina was. It's the hurricane "season". Some of them are just like a bad thunderstorms, with wind. Some times it just dies out in the gulf. I'm hoping this one does, for the sake of all the people who have already been displaced....

Dh & I actually got married during hurricane Isadore which dropped to a tropical storm at landfall.

So all in all, ya'll have pretty good weather there? I might be relocating....

Pretty candles: did you not hear about Ophelia in the UK¿ (Only curious because I am in Canada and that is the only one of the 6 mentionned on the news here.)

Report
PrettyCandles · 22/09/2005 10:19

Ophelia was mentioned in the news, but I don't recall hearing about any of the others in the news.

How awful for the displaced people - I'm not surprised they don't like being referred to as refugees, but that's what they are: people fleeing for refuge in their own country .

My sister and her family are being evacuated from League City, TX as we speak.

It appears the evacuation is proceding well and people are cooperating with authorities.

Kyototo anyone ?

Not taking from what is going on, but global warming has got to be playing some part in this.

Exactly, lgj - I just said as much to DD1. When is Bush going to Get It?

(DD1 said ah, but Washington and NY don't get the damage - which is true - but a) Washington has to pay for some of it and b) this one's going to hit Texas...)
