Would you boycott Yahoo?

Yahoo have collaborated with the Chinese goverment (which has a dreadful record on human rights), giving them the information they needed to persecute a journalist for writing about the Tiannemen Square massacre. I'd boycott them but my email address that I use for work is Yahoo. B*gger. Will contact them anyway.

While I work out what to do, would anyone else care to get the ball rolling? While I look for a link?

background information - a massacre of students who gathered peacefully to protest about repression. The key image was of one brave man who stood in front of the tanks as they rolled in. They rolled over him.

they were - some time ago now. China is the victim of a tryrannical, repressive regime that uses torture and imprisons/murders those who work for freedom.

How old is SleepySuzy though? I'm 24, and only really know about it because my sister did a project on it for A Level history. I have seen documentaries since then, but don't know if I would have watched them had she not done that project.

I tend not to use yahoo anyway.

Absolutely shocking that people have never heard of Tianamen Square. I am feeling old now (History assignments?? WOW)

Would have to do some more research about it first before I started boycotting people. The thing is when you start delving deep you'd be boycotting almost everyone. Look at your bank and where they invest your money, look at companies who use child labour and so cheap its almost slave labour, companies who push baby milk formula in third world countries etc etc. You'd be banking with co-op bank and becoming self sufficenent if you wanted to avoid all wrongdooers in this world.

If its true that is terrible of yahoo.

could it be that they were under legal obligation to provide the information? Just thinking that uk police can request similar information to help with crime investigations from ISPs, mobile phone companies etc as evidence. I dont think the companies here are asked whether they agree with the law?

This link gives yahoo's side of it. By the sounds of it they were not told what the information was for. I suppose in the same way our police don't have to tell people specifically what the information they require is for but in most cases can legally compel the company to give it. It may be they had no choice.

Tricky one - terrible outcome though.

maybe my ancient age means i can't remember anything clearly, but i really can't remember the iconic man who stood in front of the tanks being run over! Was he really run over?

anyone else old enough to remember watching this on the news?

Im 26 and i do remember seeing it on the news and i thought that he didnt get run over. Not that that makes it any better obviously 100s/1000s of people were killed. And i could be completely wrong, i was only 10. Or did he walk in front of it but then get shot? Oh its no good i dont know. I'll shut up now.

I do remember and I followed the events on the news at the time. I dont think he was eventually run over though. Unless you did not watch the news/read papers at all, it was impossible not to notice.

China human right records is appauling. howwever companies should not do business with china at all if they object to this. Once they are in they have to comply with the authorities or at least adopt a corporate social repsonsibility policies that will have a positive impact. Doing business with china is very hype at the moment. Many of our clothes are made in China.

I dont think I will bother with boycotting yahoo. I dont think they are to blame. we should all stop buying chinese goods etc etc
