My mother works in an old people's home, and about 15 years ago, probably longer, a lady was brought in who had been kept in a shed for over 45 years, since she reached puberty. Her mother thought that men were evil, so she moved into the shed to keep her daughter locked up and away from men. The mother would leave the shed, but the daughter wasn't allowed to. They found her when the mother died, and the grocer who left their food in the garden for them realised something was amiss.

This woman had never seen a man before, never seen cars, couldn't hold a conversation and had never seen electricity - she would stand for hours just switching the lights on and off to see the "miracle" of electric lights. She had never had the opportunity to do any of the things we take forgranted - have a job, learn to drive, have children, read a newspaper, make friends, have a life. She had all of her mental abilities, but without the benefit of company and stimulus, hadn't had the opportunity to use them, so despite her age, she was little more than a child in her development.

This lady in India is obviously rather different because she has had no company at all, whereas the lady my mother knew had her mother, but the waste of a life and the complete and total disregard for someone's humanity still remains, and I'm amazed that anyone could think that it's in any way amusing.

This is like the habitual institualisation of women with illegitimate babies in this country who were put in mental hospitals, I suspect she had a child/pregnancy and was treated accordingly...

according to a link on the bbc page to an indian paper her father said she started showing signs of a mental illness "after rejecting a marriage proposal in her teens".
