My son is being assessed for Aspergers and he is now in year one at school and is having problems which the teachers seem to sweep under the carpet he also has health problems and has alot of time off school so they keep telling him off and also getting on my back, the other day his teacher told me his laces were too long and he needed a hair cut and that he is having no problems even though he is struggling to make a stable friend and feels bullied also he has severe headaches as he is trying his best to concentrate for long periods of time and getting very little help with things he finds very difficult to do, he just gets told they havent got the time.
I am seriously considering home educating him but i dont know if i would be able to cope as he has severe behaviour problems, could anybody give me any advice or tell me how they have coped under the same circumstances also where do i go and what do i do to start the process up? xxx

Hi Josiegriff,
I might have been speaking to you already via 'mama'. I would suggest to meet with some HE activities in your area. See if it suits you and ds. I've not being HEing long (2 wks)but my son(AS) fitted right in and it's been so pleasant. I was expecting meltdowns, tantrums, whilst adjusting and instead I we have had the lovliest time together I had ever experienced...Of course an outing in a crowed place is still an outing in a crowed place( eg. supermarkets!)

Where to start the process?
www.education-otherwise.org/
They'll provide the help with the legal aspect (ie. drafting a de-registration letter-in 'resourcesand links',...)and info on contacts locally. Personally I wished I started with meeting other Home educators: I might not have stressed so much the months before taking the decision.

Big hugs

agree with Fava-see if you can meet with other home educators locally.

AND meet loads of other parents who have been exactly where you are right now, online on the Home Education Sopecial Needs email support list

There is also a book for you to read, where other parents talk about home educating their children with similar needs.
Home Educating Our Autistic Spectrum Children: Paths are made by walking edited by Terri Dowty and Kitt Cowlishaw

Product Description
Mainstream educational provision for children on the autistic spectrum can be inadequate or inappropriate. An increasing number of parents dissatisfied with the education system are looking elsewhere for an approach that will suit their children's needs. In "Home Educating Our Autistic Spectrum Children", parents who have chosen to home educate their children with autism or Asperger's syndrome candidly relate their experiences: how they reached the decision to educate at home, how they set about the task, and how it has affected their lives. Following these personal accounts, the final chapters offer practical advice on getting started with home education, legal advice from an expert in education law, and contact details of support organisations

You're very welcome.
As Julie suggest, it is worthwhile joining the HE-SEN list. You'll see you are not on your own. I'm currently reading the book Julie described and it's very good, from what I know about you and your ds you'll find a lot of familiar stories. I borrowed it from another Home Educator.
