Just in general....

Today we have read and done a bit of maths, spellings and played with a playmobil town.
We made a den out of the bunkbeds and quilts and shopped for advent calenders.

Today we went to the Craft shows at the NEC.
We went all around and didn't spend too much money-now that is a first!
We did get some good ideas for using the crafty things we already have, to make Christmas presents and cards.
DD did some pyrographics and we both learned to knit! (We met a fellow home educator in the knitting stand-and she had the patience to teach two dyslexics to knit AND she will be at a home ed meeting with us tomorrow, to correct tonights mistakes

Just wandering round the food section and moaning because everything contained dairy or meat-and then turned the corner and found a lovely stall with home made sundried tomato bread -and another with stuffed olives/vineleaves etc mmmmmm!

DD continued my education in plant based nutrition by telling me all about olive oils and balsamic vinegars
Had a lovely train journey home, discussing what her future plans are and what we should organise for the HE meeting tomorrow.

Life is pretty good isn't it.

I love Olives, mmm. They're like Marmite though it seems, no middle ground.

How old are your dc's still being HE'd Julie?

today we wrote some thankyou notes, did a spot of biology (learning about lungs and respiration) then groceries were delivered so we downed tools, ate cake and creme brulee then feeling a bit sick we took the dogs for a walk on he beach whilst trying to do the anagram which was 'fireworks display' and it took us about 2 hours to realise what it was!

Yesterday we went to the Royal Institution to listen to a lecture about the heart and saw a live dissection. It was fantastic, we learnt soo much!!
Anyone near London I highly recommend these, we're going to a chemistry one next week and they are free!!
And there's lots of home educators there!

rb I am so

Oh I don't know what to say, yet again I wish we lived in londom still. there is so little here on science really, and it is so hard to find really good stuff.

When my kids are a little older we are seriously considering renting somewhere unsalurbious in london for a few weeks every year (dp would have to work).

Fillyjonk,

Have you looked at the Travel lodge website?
I have friends coming down from Lancashire at Christmas and they are staying at Canary Wharf for £19 a night, you might even get one cheaper.

I'm loving reading this!

(sorry I'm not contributing specifics about our days - don't feel comfortable with that in a public forum )

Ah - to do with family not giving permission for me to share details of their lives publically, or, me only sharing details of family life when given permission Just put it down as the latest of my weirdnesses to emerge

fair comment. But are you having a nice day?

busy busy busy busy with boring tasks which is why I keep distracting myself with MNing (I'm the WOHP, remember ). But boring tasks leading to a goal I really DO want to achieve, so the motivation is keeping me going. It's all self inflicted!

sorkycake-she has just turned 16-the other two are already past 'compulsory education age' and out in the world happy and doing fine.
so only a few more months of offically being a home educator!

fillyjonk-just talking to friends who have got family rooms in the Travelodge sale, on the outskirts of London for £9/night!

We tend to go down for a long day-use Megabusget there really cheaply and do all sorts of things-maybe sughtseeing and museums or matinee at a theatre-take pillow with us and sleep on very late bus home.

also fillyjonk-can't remember just how old your children are, but locally we found out about Institute of Physics Lectures lots of home ed families go along and they are free/very cheap and excellent!
We have home ed children from about eight years old going along, quite regulary.

I have a 9 month old daughter and am interested in HE, I don't have much family support though, but I am quite strong minded! Is it too much to take on with just my partner and I (I'll be a full time student) with quite a limited budget for trips/materials etc...?

Report
julienoshoes · 15/11/2008 11:56

LOL! most of us have a very limited budget Rach!

Home education can cost as much as you want to spend to be honest, but we do it o a very small budget, but then we don't buy school shoes/uniform/fancy label clothes.
I drive an old car and use a family railcard to get about.
We do use charity shops/ebay/car boots and don't go on fancey holidays.
We do go to home ed camps (none profit making) and get bargain travelodge rooms/sun newspaper hols.

And we have managed all the way through teenage years.

So yes for a determind person, it would be very doable!

Fillyjonk · 16/11/2008 08:19

oooh at all the london deals

I think I will be off down to London as soon as I can manage the 3 of them alone in a travelodge

the IOP stuff is great, have just found a bunch of suggested lesson plans for physicists going into schools-very good! (we'd adapt them a lot but its always useful to know how these things can be presented)

Rach1523 - HE is infinitely possible if you're determined ;-)

I've been making a box full of activities to pick and choose from through the day - plan on adding to it each evening so there's plenty in there. Nothing's chosen for education purposes - just for fun, but I'm sure plenty of learning will get done!

If you like science experiments -have you found http://krampf.com/members/ Robert Krampf's site?
Science videos to watch but best of all an experiment of the week, sent free to your inbox.

"This is a collection of science experiments taken from Robert Krampf's Experiment of the Week. They use common, household materials. They are simple enough for young scientists, but should provide some new angles for more advanced readers"

We have had family visit today and played board games and the wii. Mondays are always very lazy for us.

Ooh, we wrote out some Christmas cards and a list for Santa (as if I could forget the list of impossible items for this year)

I think maybe I should let them watch commercial tv and then have more accessible options
