Walnut or oak floor??

Hi ladies I'm wondering if you could help me pick a wooden floor for my new living room! I've had walnut in my head for so long- love the look of it. However when I went to price it the sales assistant kept pointing me towards brushed oak instead. His argument for brushed oak is that it is more forgiving for hiding scratches than dark wood. It's also a bit cheaper.

Now I'm torn between my head and my heart! I still love the look of walnut but I actually haven't seen any houses in the flesh with it in it- all seem to have oak/ pine. My decor will be pale grey walls and cream sofas and maybe purple/ burgundy cushions.

Any advice- do any of u have walnut floors and regretted it?? Any pics to share? Please help!

We have had both in different houses.
Absolutely adore the walnut. It's wide planks with a work effect. It is in a new bright house with white skirting and loads of light.
We chose oak for another house as older and darker and reflected more light about.

Thanks for the reply! I reeealllyyy love the richness of the walnut but then my mother worried me by saying it'd close in the room. My living room is medium sized- 4m x 4.5m and bright and I'm getting doors and skirting painted white. I know it'll show scratches easier but all wood scratches!

I have walnut and it's beautiful! It is quite a soft wood, though. Have not noticed scratches as such, but rather dents where heavy objects have been. Even so, it doesn't really spoil the look. I love it and get lots of compliments on it.

Thanks Cleanthatroomnow! Do you have smallies? I've my first on the way and am wondering would walnut be scratched to bits with kiddies toys? God I wish I was a decisive person!

I have both Walnut and a distressed oak. Most of my downstairs is a glossy Walnut. It looks beautiful, but due to it being glossy, it shows up scratches fairly easily. I'm a childminders though and we're rough on it. The rough oak is in the kitchen. It's new and want my first choice for a kitchen. however I have to say it is a nice floor. If it gets scratched in the future it'll be easy to put some wax craton on it and it won't look bad as it's distressed look anyway. I'm happy to pm you sooner photos.

Just realised this is fairly old thread. oops!
