Can you have a wooden counter top in a bathroom?

The person who used to live in our house was a bit of a DIY man and he basically designed the bathroom and put what looks like an old kitchen work top on the surface connecting the sink, toilet and ontop of cupboards.

I'm not completely against the design of the bathroom but I hate the work surface. It needs to be changed.

The only problem is knowing what to change it too. Because of the design we do need some kind of work top but the options seem to be quite limited (only looked in B&Q or ikea though). I like wood - but is that daft? Unhygienic and likely to get ruined very quickly?

The cupboard I death are white, tile are medium blue, walls off white blue.

Really I would love to rip thewholeyhing out but we can't afford to.

My sister has a wood work top like the one you describe. You will need to look after it, but it's not that hard. You wash it with warm water with soap flakes (or liquid soap flakes) in (use a brush, like a nail brush or similar) and keep it as dry as possible. Every now and again add a few drops of glycerin and/or cooking oil to soap flakes, this will help the wood repel water. If you get any marks or dents, just use a piece of fine sand paper to sand it off.

You could also paint the wood, but makes sure you use a proper prime base coat before the top coat or it will start flaking in a matter of months.
