We are in the process of redesigning our hall, stairs and landing Grin stupidly over excited about this I love the look of painted stairs but wonder if they mark easily and how noisy they are?

Anyone done it? Any advice or wisdom to impart? Thanks

Watching with interest. We're renovating and have discovered a lovely staircase but I'm worried about noise and paint marking too. I'm considering paint with a nice stripy runner.

We had painted stairs in last house, loved it, was not too noisy but only had one DC and he was toddler not the big tween he is now!

I used water based eggshell, got trade place to mix using fired earth oak apple tester. It's a green-based grey so a scuff friendly colour.

Our current carpet is knackered and trying to persuade DH we need to rip it up and just repaint...

I did mine with emulsion and it was a tiny bit slippery sometimes in socks.

Did mine with cream gloss, looked lovely but scuffed and got dirt on really easily . Was very noisy.

I painted mine because I wanted them to look fresh and clean. It did look great, but every tiny bit of dust was visible. The stairs were easy to clean, but it was a never ending job. It was also very noisy and, as stated above, slippery in socks.
I now have carpet and wouldn't have them painted again, not in this house anyway.

I used to live in a Semi detatched with the stairs on the adjoining wall. Next door had painted their stairs. The only sound we ever heard from there was their 4 kids thundering up and down the stairs. We never heard another sound once they got carpet.

Hmmm thinking painted with a runner might be a better option then...

I have painted stairs with a runner as I was considered about slipping on stairs plus the noise too.

My brother did this, painted his stairs white.

After 6 months they have decided to put a runner on it because it's really slippy and also shows every single hair - honestly it looked dirty an hour after hoovering!

We have plain wood stairs which aren't that slippy and don't show the dirt at all

I had white painted stairs for ages, not too noisy as we are a shoes off when inside house (shoes usually muddy from dog walking).

They are carpeted now, after concluding it'd be safer for dd, however both adults have fallen/slipped on the stairs, which neither of us did when they were painted. Hmm

Ours (victorian 3 storey terrace) are painted white with a matt gloss.

They do mark fairly quickly, and definitely show dust/hair almost as soon as you've finished vacuuming. Less noisy since we repainted them in March.

I was worried about slipping but ds(2yo) doesn't know any different and has never slipped.

If I could afford it I think I'd get a runner.

To avoid scuff marks try Decorators Varnish, you can buy it in brewers in various finishes - in a blue squarish bottle. The matt one gives a lovely finish and should lessen scuff marks. Apply it in thin coats - it looks milky but dries clear.
