Was this a trick question?

This is my first post and I desperately need advice from someone who conducts interviews.
I went for an interview recently for a Clerk to the Governors role within a school setting. This was my first interview after 14 years (worked for the same organisation for 12 and then was on a career break for 2 after having DD)
I lack confidence in interviews generally but this time round I was a bigger bag of nerves.
A question arose along the lines of 'what would you do if two of the governors started an argument during the course of the meeting?'
As a clerk I would have assumed you do not chair the meeting but are there for the purposes of minute taking.
So was this a trick question? Would it be down to the chairperson to deal with any conflict which may or may not occur during the course of a meeting or is it something a clerk deals with?
I am so confused, have I misunderstood the role and made an idiot of myself?
Would be grateful for any advice anyone can give as this question 'threw' me off course and affected my confidence for the remainder of the interview. It is now playing on my mind a lot. It's a small role but as I said previously, my confidence isn't great generally at the best of times.

I suppose it would depend on what the argument was about. If it was about legal matters, then the clerk has a role in advising the GB. Routinely, though, you are right that the Chair should be pulling together the meeting.

Maybe they were asking for minute taking purposes? for example if one of the governors started an argument, would you include it in the minutes? would you include it verbatim or just cover the main points? maybe this is something that happens from time to time within their organisation and they don't want "governorX referred to governorY and the chair as a fucking bunch of twats" to appear in the minutes.

Thank you both for your quick replies.

Lougle-I did actually reply along those lines although admittedly didn't specifically talk about advising from a legal point of view as I have no experience of this in this sector (but hoping training will be available should I get the job). Can I ask do/have you undertaken this role? If so, did you have the knowledge on the law prior to getting the job?

Xcountry- That's a good point. I didn't think of it from that angle although there was a similar question regarding the recording of confidential matters in the minutes so I am hoping I covered that there.

I don't have experience of being a clerk, but I am a Governor and deal with training for our GB.

There should be a clerks' course for you to attend if you get the job. Don't worry too much about that.

Ok, so I didn't get the job.
In my feedback, the question I didn't do too well in is one related to equal opportunities. Although I do know what this means I guess I wasn't able to express explicitly how I would use the equal opportunities legislation when writing out the minutes. Any ideas anyone? I have applied for another similar role, so would like to be prepared if such a question comes up again and give a more thorough answer next time.
Thanks
