If my working hours are 9-6 and i have to travel to a course for work which means staring from home at 6am and getting home at 7pm can i claim the travel time back?

I wouldn't have thought so. You should be able to claim travel expenses above and beyond your usual costs.

Yes I would say so if your employer insists you attend the course

I think i should be allowed to have the time back after all i missed 4 hours at home because of this course, if i was just going to my regular place of work i would have left home at 8.45 to be home at 6.15.

Well then speak to your manager if you feel you should get time in lieu. Do you usually work to rule so strictly?

What do you mean by work to rule?

If I was your manager I'd be taken aback by your cheek!

Presumably the course is paid for by your employers? The skills you gain from attending the course are yours forever.

If the reverse was the case (you could leave home later than usual and be back again earlier than you get home from work) would you be suggesting they cut your pay?

And is lunch included in the course provision? You'd normally have to pay for your own lunch and now your employer is indirectly footing the bill.

You are of course entitled to ask your manager, but if you'd like to avoid being regarded as grabby I don't think you should.

I mean work to your hours so strictly that you'll claim you'll miss four hours of 'home time'. That's working life - and what Optimist said.

I used to go to head office or on a training course every couple of months, these were usually down South ( up to 4 hours drive)
I used to set off at 5.30 and get home at 9 . Never occurred to me to ask for extra money and I doubt any of the other employees did either.

Yeah at my place of work we do work to our hours strictly, there is no flexibility with hours. Nearly every night we get out of work 10 minutes late but if staff arrive late to work for any reason they get disciplined.
