I am about to do a back to nursing course and there is a maths test on the computer we have to do to get through. I am a little freaked out about this and wandered if anyone has done one or knows the kind of maths in it so I know what to study? Help!

Yes I have. It's just standard arithmetic and drug calculations. Are you doing it via a Uni? They should be able to give you access to the program for practice.

Am going for a RTP nursing course interview. Would really welcome some advice on interview questions. Have been out for 20yrs so rather apprehensive but excited about it. Help please!

I have just finished my course and Im waiting on results. I got myself in a state over the interview and it turned out to be not so bad. It was more of a chat about what they expected and any questions I had. I have heard that some of the others on the course were asked about recent changes so you may want to read Liberating the NHS and No decision about me without me. It always good to have read a recent article relating to health. This could be from a newspaper and be prepared to offer your views on it. Hope this helps and good luck. Im no good at linking but if you look back through here you will see a long discussion with several of us doing the RTP.

NothingLeft I am doing it through a uni, any more gudence you can give me on what type questions in it the list of what I may need to learn is huge im even looking at simplifying fractions and division with double numbers, really need to narrow it down, any examples of 'standard erythmetic and drug calcs you think I should focus on' sorry I am really worried about it even my basic maths is not good. I knw there is practice tests im not sure if this is on the same day before the main test also not sure if I get more than 1 attempt?

stillkicking don't worry about the interview it is informal they will ask 'why you left?' Why you want to return?' Any changes you know of I looked at 2 one was 'The FRancis Report' the other major change was '2012 Health and Social Care Act' They are good ones to know a little about 2 should be enough, hope that helps!

If you subscribe to Nursing Times (it's not that expensive) there are some practice drug calculations on their website.

I am trying to get on the Return to Practice course for September so I expect I will be in the same boat as you very soon. Good luck.

Sorry I haven't the time to reply properly but you will need long division and multiplication.

Ill try and put examples up a bit later.

Went not too bad hotcrossbun99 thanks for asking! Got asked the function of the NMC,what I had done since leaving Nursing what changes had occurred in Nursing and Medicine since I had left 20 years ago what help I might need in completing the course academically and practically and a question re importance of good communication. Haven't heard yet whether or not I have been successful.

I didn't even get to an interview for the return to practice course. When I asked for feedback as to why not, I was told very abruptly that I had to at least do a short course at my local college at level 5 (which is degree level and there are no short courses at level 5!) and do 6 months as a care worker as I had done no care work in the past 15 years. I can't see me getting a care work job with no recent experience so it's back to the drawing board.

It should be fairly easy to get some care work ,albeit community based there are loads of agencies always looking for people although it will probably be poorly paid .

hotcrossbun99 Thanks for asking have not done it yet course starts 17th June but got my placement sorted, and yes still freaked out about the maths just sticking to SI Units/multiplication,simplification and division of fractions as thats what I have been told is in it. Just dont know if Im going to get asked scenarios such as if u need to give .... over..... what rate will it run e.t.c or if I will have to work out a medicine dosage ! No idea but am doing general prep and hope that helps !

Hotcrossbun99 you will have no bother whatsoever getting work with agencies as a care worker. I have been doing it for 8wks now and i was out for 20yrs! Have got put on reserve list for BtoN course so in meantime am aiming to get a band 3 post preferably in NHS as you will get overtime etc. Agency pay crap but shop around. Good luck

Thanks Stillkicking, I am looking into it. Was it a huge shock to the system when you started doing shifts? I can imagine that every little thing has changed in the past 15 years.

Report
stillkicking · 29/05/2013 21:41

no Hotcrossbun99 it wasnt that big a shock cos I am not actually doing shifts. At the minute I only have about 7 calls a day in the local community. This means a lot of to-ing and fro-ing and can be a bit of a nuisance plus some agencies wont pay you petrol money but I will tolerate it until I get something more stable. As regards change basic nursing care hasn't changed and I consider mine to be as good as it ever was and love looking after my wee charges.

Glad to find this thread. I just started my RtP course and I'm really excited and inspired by the first two study days. I'm currently trying to find examples of ways of organising your PREP portfolio so I can get started on mine in a way that hopefully won't need changing every time I find my initial ideas won't work!

Has anyone else had a big disappointment and impossible hard RTP Interview Test on Maths?
I was full of hope and having read previous links here to Interview questions; I went in fairly confident having articles about 2/3/4 latest changes to laws But Nothing prepared me for Math's test! I was placed in a large empty room for One whole hour to do a "Maths Test"...& afted I asked the pass rate...the Lead Nurse said:"It must be perfect. Horror.
I sat there and eventually move onto the "discussion short essay on 'Resiliance in Nurses: Discuss'.
I ran out of time. The Maths was hard in itself without the English essay and the empty room!!
I felt it had gone well.
Got a call later & he told me; the Uni lead "It is University Level now"
& you said you have a car.
We need people who have a car. Try again if you like. I will send you "Maths for Nurses if you like!"
I wept. Im deeply disappointed.
I was told to apply by the former lead of the course ; as they want Palliative Care RGN's with my experience.
I feel sad that I had No warning about the difficulty level of the Maths test.
Just a warning...any of you...prepare for the Maths test. I wasnt allowed to use my calculator. It was vey tough

I'm having my interview for the return to nursing course this month. Very nervous. Apparently it only takes half hour and there is nothing about a maths test. Any tips on interview questions would be greatly appreciated

Hi kellymcc. How did your interview go. I have one on Monday in Manchester but I think it’s only half an hour. They didn’t say anything re maths.
