Do I ever have a chance of finding a decent career; What to do?

I'm a single mum living in a rural SW area . I have a degree in English and a PGCE. I got pregnant after PGCE, had a 3.5 career break and now I am working in learning support. I am currently applying for jobs back in teaching but with little success as the field is so strong. So strong in fact that my employeres have told me I won't get a promotion and that although thye don't want to loose me I should look elsewhere.
I am considering other careers and I am thinking of publishing, editing, well anything that pays well and is interesting. Most of the jobs are in London but I don't want to move there for a few more years til dd is older. I am also a little bit flummoxed by the job descriptions; everything seems very competetive and tbh I don't have enough energy to put into my career as i did. When young I had a breakdown (dv caused)which messed up my career prospects and I have strugggled to get back on my feet. I am 35 so I need to crack on really.

Could you do freelance journalism or would that be too unpredictable? Or supply teaching?
