Returning to career after seven years - what to apply for?

I really want to return to work after being at home with my 3dcs for seven years.
Is it realistic to apply for jobs at the level I was at before having children? Or should I lower my sights and apply for jobs at a lower level?
I've seen a job doing basically what I was doing before having children but I just can't see that I'd have a chance of getting it. My dh thinks I should go for it but I feel like I'm setting myself up for a fail.
I worked in creative / marketing type role, if it makes any difference.

You have absolutely nothing to lose to apply and see what happens. It is harder the longer you've been out of work, but you never know!! I do know people who have been SAHMs for 7 years and went straight back in from where they left from - a combination of luck, contacts and perhaps being in the right place at the right time.

Good luck!!

Go for it, there was a study once when exactly the sae job description was advertised at £20k and £100k salary. No one applied for the £100 k job but they got thousands of applicants for the lower paid job.
Set your sights high!

I am in exactly the same position - both are now at high school (youngest is disabled so worried about how that will go down too). I intend to give it a shot though.

If things haven't moved on I think you're in with a shot.
I saw a job I could have been perfect for 9 years ago, but sadly I worked in a Techie area & lots has changed since then.

Slightly different, as I'm going back after 4 years into a new sector, but aiming for a job where the skill set is very similar to what I did before. I have had no luck with then lower paid, more junior positions and I suspect it's because I look 'over qualfied', so I've just applied for something nearer to the level I used to be at, and we shall see what happens! it can't be any worse than what I've not managed so far. Perhaps try applying for both types of job if that's practical?

I was recently in a similar position. 7 years at home and looking to return to career.

I applied for dozens and dozens of positions which were below the level I was at pre-DC and got nowhere.

My absolute perfect job came up, didn't believe for a second I'd get it but it was so ideal I couldn't not apply, just so I could say well at least I tried.

Anyway, I got it! Aim high, you've nothing to lose. Good luck.
