OMG!!! I've got an interview......

HRHQoQ · 04/10/2005 17:49

tomorrow!!!

Just had a phone call from the nursing home where I applied for a job last week. She called and asked to speak to me, said it was I, and she said who she was, and I was so flustered as I was in the middle of cooking dinner I couldn't think who she was - she remineded me it was about the job, and was I still interested......duh no - course I'm not LOL.

Asked when the best time for an interview was - and told her mornings, because of DH's (well didn't say DH obvsiuly LOL), hours - and she said 12 tomorrow.

OMG - I'm SOOOOOOOOO nervous - haven't had an interview before

Thanks to everyone who helped me fill in the form last week

Right better get back to dinner (if I can concentrate) and hopefully you lot will come up with lots of tips for me

I don't know - my 'smart' trousers are looking a bit tatty (if you look between my leg - perhaps this calls for a rare outing of a skirt

Tops - god I haven't got a clue

You will not make an arse of yourself-you will stay composed and you will look just fine.

Now,will you have time later to write down a list of possible Q and A's?

do you want me to ask DH for some tips for you? He manages several care homes and employes care assistants all the time. I could ask him what he looks for and what makes particular candidates stand out.

Good luck for tomorrow!

Talk about how much you look forward to looking after the elderly people there.

Ask about what the job will involve. Will you be expected to help in the kitchen. Is there a cleaner or will you be doing cleaning too.

Ask about whether they have frequent outings for the folk.

I'll think some more.

HRHQoQ · 04/10/2005 20:12

It said in the advert some light domestic work, but I don't think it will be much (any) actually 'cleaning' per se. 2 reasons

  1. I also saw an advert of theirs lookking for a cleaner (so they obviously had one)

  2. It's a night job (between 9.45 and 7.30) and I don't suppose the old dears would be too impressed with me crashing round the home doing the cleaning (unless they're deaf like my grandad and wouldn't hear a thing LOL).

Nights right.

Will you be sleeping or waking nights. I would hope in the nursing home it should be waking nights.

How many other staff are there.

Do you know how many people live there? Are there any couples living there (some places have double bedrooms).

Would you want to do anything like an NVQ? Have a think on it and ask if it might be at all possible it you fancy it.

Report
HRHQoQ · 04/10/2005 20:20

Waking nights (I couldn't cope with sleeping nights - I'm cr*p at having to wake up for my own kids in the night - DH does it - so the chances of me managed to successfully wake up, and be in the right frame of mind to sort an old dear out is practically nil LOL).

I know (from a little bit of reserach last week) that there's spaces for 22 - and I think there's 1 double bedroom (shall ask that )

In the ad it said NVQ Level 2 Preferred, but not essential as training can be given - so I'm hoping that I'll be able to do it. As it's something that really interests me.

hmm just thought - think I'd better open a 'word' window and right some of the questions down LOL.

okay, here is DH's reply in all it's sordid glory lmao.............

I've cut and pasted please note that I cannot be held responsible for the opinions posted below....lol

Apart from long brown legs, dark eyes, ample bosom, I would have to say someone with an understanding of participation ie allowing people to maintain their existing skills rather than become passive reciepants of care.

Awareness of risks, ie temperatures of baths, manuel handling risks to self and others, awareness of the use of chemicals around the house and safe storage, the way care homes are inspected, so an understanding for why we have to write accident reports, incidents reports, care plans, medication forms. A sense of the bigger picture means someone has an understanding that care homes are their to provide care but also to evidence they provide good care. Tenant participation and involvement shows good values being engaging with tenants and eye contact and the right use of tone when speaking to people. Not talking about a tenants bowel movements in front of another tenant etc Someone with prior care experience even personal experience, explaining who they have cared for, what worked, what didn't, what they would have done different. Even when she was in hospital thinks about the care recieved, good bad etc Focus on the good stuff and include that in your answers.

Dress smart. Smile, ask questions about staff training, if the tenants get to go out, that they like doing, ask about the care home, ie show interest.

Ask yourself what would you like from a care home if you had to move into one tommorow. Most of us would want caring staff, staff that take an interest, have time for us, will listern to us, help us, give us space when needed, treat us with respect,

Being vetted under CRB why? Show awareness ie not allowing people with conviction to get to work in places with vunerable adults. Duty to report abuse to the manager, awareness of good practice and bad practice.

Good team skills working with others not someone who would argue with a lampost. Sharing work load, being involved in team meetings, having supervision and training.

Hope that helps

My top tip for interviews is don't wear perfume.

People rely on their sense of smell subconsciously - it can go against you without the interviewer even realising they're doing it!
