I have been reading through alot of these posts and you would never find such horrible remarks in special needs forum. My DD (I won't comment or list her abilities) Is amazing to me as are all the other children to their mums. I need help with her gifts and thought i'd find it here. It is very hard work bringing her up although i love any minute I feel sick everytime i have to go to the school ,worry about her emotional state (as she puts alot of pressure on herself) and ALL i want is a happy and content Little Girl. If that means she has to be on a GT list to get help fine but There are alot of genuine concerns with GT children that I would like support with from people who understand not backstabbing remarks. It is wrong of me but I am ashamed to talk about her in the playground to other mums incase they think i am boasting, surely i should be able to come on here and talk openly about things with out the same kind of playground stigma.

What makes you think you can't? I honestly do't think you will find a horrible remark about a child anywhere. Sometimes the so-called adults go a bit over the top, but I am absolutely sure that if you post about your dd asking for support in the way you talk about her here, you will get lots of support and suggestions.

Sometimes I think it depends on the tone of the OP. For example, people who come on seeming to 'crow' get flamed. I think the way you have phrased things is great- i.e. how best to support your DD's skills.

I can only think as well that the parents on MN have wide spectrum of children with diverse strengths and needs. This is emotive territory.

ask for support and you'll probably get it- if it turns into a controvesial thread then take away the best bits of support that will be helpful for you and your DD- good luck.

Excellent post sally9. I have been lurking for quite a few months now but have been too 'scared' to post. I think you would get lots of useful advice but possibly also some less helpful comments. It's a shame, as there are people on here who really know what they are ralking about.

Wasn't there a thread about this issue a few days ago?

You can always post your concerns/needs anyway and sift your answers, chances are, wording your OP carefully, you will get mostly be sound advice. How can we help?!

thank you for your replies ladies. I will be around and might post in the future. But most importantly i wanted all the people who have commented inapropriatley to realise that whilst you will always get the odd over proud mum.(and who can blame them) Many Mums with clever children also have many issues that go along with that and should be respected as much as any other child with special needs. Whilst i realise that many mums with children with special needs would love to swap places I also wanted to say to the few very judgemental mums that think it OK to ridicule people with concerns that . "IT IS NOT EASY"

sally look at the gifted and talented thread - there's a thread on this very issue from just a week or so ago. The general consensus was:
There has not really been any actual mocking of G and T chn.
The issues that some chn with G and T have are not always related to their G and T and are more often related to their social skills.
There is usually no comparison between G and T and SEN, unless the child actually has SEN in addition to their G and T.
G and T is actually very rare. Most chn labelled as G and T in the UK are bright, but not truly 'gifted.'

O.P what a load of rubbish i.e. If that means she has to be on a GT list to get help fine but There are alot of genuine concerns with GT children that I would like support with from people who understand not backstabbing remarks.

You don't have to be on the G & T list to get help as you don't have to be on the special needs register to get help. How do you know what other children are capable of. You feel sick every time you have to go into school! Get a grip why would you want to discuss with other mum's everything! I have gifted and talented children and I don't feel the need to talk endlessly about them and what they can do.
There is no playground stigma on here you have strange issues if you are ashamed to talk about achievements. Nobody on here has made any personal comments on here about any children. There are far more worries in this world and most kids with thelabelare not gifted and talented. They are achieving targets that are not an accurate measure of ability. Remarks made are not horrible but challenging. There are many posts about support for g & t with helpful comments. I have never looked at these posts as bragging but interesting as tohow g & t is percieved on here at such an early age when it is all connected with brain development at those early stages.

I know that questions here do get some sensible and helpful answers, but the litmus test is whether you'd recommend this section to a friend or relative whose child had been labelled G+T. I don't know that I would.
