How come identifying young children as G&T is the only thing left that is done on a percentage basis

ie it's the top x% of children who are identified as G&T, it is not subjective based on abilities but only a certian 5 - 10% can be G&T .. what happens if the year is particularly able

and there's no consistency from school to school

they don't do that with exams any more do they? It used to be the top 5% gets A's (or whatever percentage) so it was competitive .. but now it's not so everyone gets As and A*s nowadays and it's devalued

I think G&T as directed by the govt is a marketing scam with little actual benefit personally but that's not the question

I'm not sure they do G&T at all at our school (maybe they do identify them but don't seem to do anything about it...)

do they stretch the kids that are clever?, when our school had parent/governor meetings the question always came up about what was being done for the more academic child, the ofsted reports mention but apart from a name on a list there is still nothing different apart from go and choose yet another book to read from the library area - would be a good place for a parent helper to be to answer questions

Teachers are not going to do anything different just 'cos they're on a list are they? Bright kids already get 'stretched' - it's called differentiation and teachers have to do it anyway. Load of bollocks.

Dc's school have a lunch club for G&T children in the IT suite. Not sure what they do, because dd couldn't be bothered to attend; she prefers time to do her own thing.

But the bright kids do not get stretched - well not at our school, no differentiation unless lucky enough to get certain teachers.

although they did have a bit of stretching just before sats (level 3 or level 5 booster sessions) but it has now stopped.

how do you know that for sure? If that's really true it would be picked up by ofsted.

It was, especially as it was mentioned on the parent comment form sent out just before ofsted - both times and still nothing changed, headteacher is either so arrogant she thinks she is right and ofsted is wrong or just a bit dim
