Whilst he sounds very bright, Whether he is gifted would depend on how he has learnt these things. If he has learnt these things because he is inquisitive and constantly asking questions and picks things up naturally as part of everyday life then he is probably gifted. If he has learnt these things by you teaching them to him in rote fashion then it might just be learned knowledge rather than true giftedness.
I met a 2 year old once who could count to 100 by the age of 2, knew 3d shape names and could read some words, he couldn't hold a pen and write any numbers or letters though. He is older now and is very much gifted. Gifted children can't always write at a young age because their fine motor skills are usually age typical or even behind due to the mind working faster than their hands allow.
These are generalisations of gifted children and each child is different. I think you just have to wait and see how your child develops as it's not easy to be certain at the age of 3.

Sorry to burst your bubble OP, but that doesn't sound gifted to me. Bright may be, but not gifted.

He will probably be given the "gifted" label when he starts school but is unlikely to actually be gifted IMO. Most of that stuff is learned by rote through the efforts of an enthusiastic parent and it evens out once they're all in school.

Unless he's self taught...

Middleagedmotheroftwo - you are not bursting her bubble, you are just plain rude

OP I have no idea if he is gifted or not but he sounds lovely, enjoy him Smile

He sounds like a bright child who is interested in his world. Just keep on making sure that his world is interesting and fun for him and keep on answering his questions and you'll not go far wrong.

I think he sounds incredibly bright and it's great that he wants to learn and absorbs everything you do with him.

I'm not sure that makes him 'gifted', but actually does it really matter that much? It's just a label. I think it's great, just keep doing what you're doing!

Im proud about him. I dont mind is he gifted or not.. Im a working lady.i spent with him only 3 or 4 hrs daily. He is in a day care.. His nanny told me he is bright may be gifted. She is a well educated lady.she taught him how to write letters & numbers. There are 7 kids in her day care. She told me he is very fast learner compared to others. so just i asked my doubt.

Curiosity I imagine I've noticed people can be very dismissive of OPs on this forum and I think it's a little unfair it's can be difficult to talk about our dc abilities and we should be able to post on here without feeling like our kids aren't good enough or we're showing off and we've wasted a thread. Why can't people either answer with a constructive reply or ignore the thread? I'm sorry if this upsets anyone that isn't my intent but I've seen some unhelpful and not very pleasant posts on here.

He could read completely at 18 mos? That is very clever. Dd2 taught herself to read before she could speak, and there are other very early readers that I know, but reading competently at 18 mos is definitely unusual.

The rest, not so much - very bright, definitely! I think that the average age of recognising letters and numbers is going to start dropping because children have such very early access to iPhones and iPads. Lots of kids with access to letters and numbers will pick them up very easily.

I also suspect it will cause a much greater spread of abilities in the kindergarten classroom, between those who use these tools with these kids and those who don't.

Yr r usually have a handful of children who turn up from nursery as competent readers, so there shouldn't be any problems in school. He sounds fun. I love little kids. They are like sponges!

This was not my experience. I taught dd to read before school. When I looked round schools one did not believe me and another said they had one child a couple of years back who could read.

Also out of curiosity, if your dd taught herself to read before she could speak how did you know she was reading?

The YR teachers I know say it is rare even in a 2 or 3 for intake to have children who can read. Occasionally there is 1 or 2 but often none. This is in an area where ousted consider that children start school average or above average.

18 months is very young to be able to read properly, DS1 recognised letters/numbers out of order at that age but could read by the time he was 3. He is gifted in literacy at 8 yo. His friend couldn't read until the end of the autumn term of yr and is also gifted so none of it is necessarily relevant.

richmal - even if a pre-verbal child can't read you a story, they can do what the word says or match it to the object it represents. My 7yo is non-verbal and has severe learning difficulties, but can always navigate a menu on a tablet, find credits in any game, recognise the names of shops and TV programs, in some cases devoid of their logo etc. If he makes me sound words out and I deliberately get it wrong, then there's some words that he will get cross at me for getting wrong and others that he'll pull a Hmm face at because I didn't make sense.

So is it more a case of the two year old having recognised one or two words like "dog" from being read to previously, rather than being able to demonstrate they have worked out how to sound out sentences like "Here is a dog" from a book all by themselves.

I am obviously taking the "Dd2 taught herself to read" too literally.

I'm gifted but couldn't do that. It only came really apparent when I was 6/7. Having kids of my own, I'm pretty impressed. The brightest of my 3 demonstrated that by counting to 5 aged 2 (because my mum taught her).

I would concentrate on just keeping your child busy and engaged.

DS1 taught himself to read but what I mean by that is that he had a kids laptop thing that taught phonic sounds, he then figured out that if he put the sounds together he could read the words. I had no idea until one day he told me he could read, he could read all basic phonetically spelt words.

He then learnt the next stage sounds (putting 2 letters together such as 'er' and 'or' but he also seemed to have a good understanding meaning of he phonetically sounded out a word and it didn't quite sound right he could figure out what it meant.

I have often wondered if Dd was gifted but i think she is just smart. She knew the whole alphabet before she was 2 simply because she was and is very much into books. She then went on to "read" to me one night the whole bible story about David and Goliath, again this was not reading. She had memorised the story. However, on the pc she could write a some words like God, Jesus, mamma, pappa, gran and a few more. She can count and is only getting to understand how to count to 100. She later learned to write her name on the pc then had breakdowns when she couldn't write the the same S on paper. She has mustered all this and more before 4. Is she giftet? Time will tell. It is when she explains the whole digestive system to me that sometimes i am Hmm.

Enjoy your little boy Op and see what happens. I normally try to downplay my Dd' s intelligence because no one will ever see it as such and we live in a "Jante Love" country so giftet is not a word you will ever hear where we live. The whole thing about everyone being equal and all.
