I drink about 1.5 pints in the morning, 1.5 at lunch and 1.5 at dinner when I am at home. At work I often get through nearly one of those big water bottles per day after 1 pint at breakfast and 1.5 at dinner. Offhand I can't convert that the litres (too early in the morning !) - but I guess it is at least 1.5 litres. Have been doing this for years.

What effects were you expecting ?

I don't like water...it's bleuuurgggh. Marginally better if it's from the filter jug in the fridge.

I like hard water (where I grew up and live now) - but really can't stand soft water (eg in the Peak District).

i grew up int he desert!
well, not quite, riyadh in saudi arabia is not really the sahara, especially as the house is airconditioned, as is the school, and the car, and the shopping mall...etc etc
but still, growing up there, we all got used to drinking water, adn lots of it. i never go anywhere without a bottle of water, and always insist on water at meal times. never added it up, but im sure it is more than 1.5 litres a day.
dont know abuot the fuzzy feeling though.

I've been told that water in tea and coffee doesn't count towards your water intake during the day. But what about a no added sugar squash in water?
I find it really hard to drink more than 2 or three glasses of plain water each day but can drink more if it has Robinsons 'R' blackcurrant squash in it. Does this still count ?

I buy the 1.5 litre bottles of water so I know I have to drink it. I think you quickly get used ti it and if I.m busy or out and don't have any I get thirsty more than I used to . Also good if you have bit of a headache or if tired in afternoon. Also my skin much clearer. The kids don't drink much water in the house bit if we are in car or out we take bottles of water for them .

ixel - 10 litres ?! I have a friend who drank too much water - he wad to cut down - something to do with the blood not working properly - not being able to carry the nutrients about properly. And probably puts a lot of pressure on the kidneys too.

feezy - it is something to do with the balance of electrolytes (I think) - to do with absorption in the gut - I think the squash is probably not as good as plain water. I geuss our bodies developed to drink water - anything else is a bit alien to our system.

10 litres! Isn't that tough on your kidneys? That's 20 pints - do you drink other fluids too? Seriously, I think that it is possible to drink too much water. Are you actually thirsty all the time? Perhaps you ought to get checked for diabetes as that is a huge amount (don't want to alarm you).

I drink about 5 pints a day, don't know how many litres that is. If I stop I tend to get cystitis. Also helps wrinkles not look so noticeable. I look quite haggard when I'm not drinking lots of water. (don't look great when I am, but a bit better )

ixel 10 litres is masses, maybe you should cut it down, it is poss to drink too much water...
I am a bit of a water evangelist, drink about 1.5-2 litres a day, have done for years. Gave up coffee when pg and feel much better for that and the water too. Sure it makes yr skin better and good for stopping cystitis and ehadaches which i used to get a lot.
Good for you coddy to start, may take a while to notice any effects tho!
Kayleigh, yes, tea and coffee is "minus" water, but squash is fine tho of course sugar is bad for teeth and weight (and no sugar is worse IMO)

You don't have to drink 1.5l of water on top of all the fluid already in your diet. And tea and coffee do count towards total of dietary fluids.

Really really boring but the only rules for which there is established, reliable nutritional evidence are 'everything in moderation' and 'several portions of fruit/veg a day' and 'make sure you get plenty of variety in your diet eg. diff coloured food'.

No-one's going to make millions or write a best-seller saying that though, so it gets drowned out amongst all the other messages out there.

Kayleigh · 17/11/2004 12:16

edam, are you sure about the tea/coffee thing? I have heard so many times from different sources that tea/coffee doesn't count.

Report
listmaker · 17/11/2004 12:16

I'm with Edam. I read that it's 2 litres a day of aLL fluids, inclduing tea and coffee, water in foods etc. It makes sense because I don't drink much water but have great skin, am really healthy etc. I also read that all that water stretches your stomach and makes it less easy to tell when you're full and can make you over-eat (I do over-eat but can't use the water as an excuse )

Report
throckenholt · 17/11/2004 12:27

I agree with Kayleigh - I am sure tea and coffee have things in that make it actually harder to absorb the water content - not putting that very well - sorry !

Pidge · 17/11/2004 12:27

I read an article in the Guardian recently about the tea coffee debate! Wish I could remember when and where so I could link it.

Anyway, the recommendation was that tea and coffee do count, BUT obviously they're not as good as plain water because they contain caffeine etc which should only be consumed in moderation.

Similarly squashes are fine in terms of your fluid intake, but water is better because it hasn't got sugar, colourings etc.

I'm a water addict too - definitely get my 1.5 l

I thought the whole point of not including tea and coffee was because caffiene is a diuretic??

Report
Pidge · 17/11/2004 12:43

Apparently it is not such a diuretic that it actually results in a minus effect on your fluid intake. That's what this article I read was saying. Will try to find it.

Kayleigh · 17/11/2004 12:51

Have just googled and manged to find around 6 reports - 3 which say tea and coffee counts and 3 which say caffeine dehydrates so should not be included. One of them goes so far as to say that if you drink tea and cofee you need to drink extra water to compensate.

So i guess choice is yours !

OK, sorry, didn't realise there was any doubt about that coffee and tea thing! interesting...
Anyway, caffeine isn't good for you as it's a drug. Do worry about people (used to be me!) who drink several cups a day.

I find it quite easy as I have a 1.5 litre bottle beside me all day at work and swig from that all day (usually finish it just before I go home) and then I have some OJ at brekfast + water at home in the evening. Problem is I find I need to go to the loo alot.

Report
Pidge · 17/11/2004 13:05

Kayleigh - excellent! That just sums it up doesn't it.

My view is that in moderation they're probably fine, but to be sure I wouldn't include them in my 1.5 litres. Not drinking either at the moment having gone off them in pregnancy which makes it easy!
