As I've said before, I live in Spain and speak Spanish but not fluently. At dd's last apointment with the pediatrician she said something about her head not quite turning right in one direction, but that it was nothing to worry about.

Later she said she had made an appointment with a "traumatologist" (that's what the dictionary says anyway) but I'd already taken up a lot of her time and couldn't quite follow her reply when I asked why - she said she was sending dd for "ecographia" which usually translates as a scan.

Does anyone know what a traumatologist is (would it be the same as a cranial osteopath?) and would this scan be routine? Just that I'd like to know before I take her really - and I can formulate my questions in advance!

Lucy

'Traumatologist' sounds horrible doesn't it; I'm sure it's lost something in translation!

My dd had a comparable suspected problem (not in her neck) and she was first sent to the radiographer for an x-ray, which was then reviewed by the radiologist and the orthopaedic consultant. Following this, the affected joint was examined using ultrasound.

I am assuming that in any case like this where the range of movement in a particular part of the body is less than expected, the first line of action is to find out if the basic structures are normal (bones and muscles).

Hth, love Mopsy xx

medically translated an ologist is someone who studies,so in this case it would translate as someone who studies trauma,i can only think that maybe they are checking to see if your daughters problems are caused by some kind of trauma i.e birth problems.

Lucy, typing traumatology into an online dictionary comes up with this: "The branch of medicine that deals with the treatment of serious wounds, injuries, and disabilities."

Also found this site, which might explain some more for you. Hth.

I think it's one of those things that sound worse than it is. Trauma in medical terms normally means something untoward that has happened: a broken leg is classed as a trauma to the leg, a chest wound is a trauma to the chest.

I would guess that the truamatologist will look to see if there is something around causing the imbalance in the head turning. It could be something that has always been there or something she has acquired since/due to being born. If she says it's nothing serious it prob isn't. Hopefully, it will be good to know what's going on or it may have cleared up on it's own by then.

All the best.

A traumatologist is a doctor who specialises in injuries, but in this country, and in most European countries, this would be a doctor/ surgeon who has had training in orthopaedics, the branch of medicine which deals with bones and joints. "Echografia" is an ultrasound scan, which will probably be to look at a muscle in the neck to see if there is any swelling which might cause the head to not turn fully one way. Hope this makes sense... don't worry, its usually not serious!
