awful blocked nose

hi, my dd is just a week old and suffering terribly with snuffly blocked nose.Am quite distressed to see her frustrated attempts to feed and breathe through it; she's my first and I'm scared. Can anyone help? I don't know if it's an allergy thing or a cold but not nice. (She is breast fed.)

can you keep her head raised (pillow underneath matress of moses basket not above it helped my dd also try to clear as much of her nose as poss. Is she still feeding? does she have temp if worried would call NHS direct they are very helpful

If she is frustrated trying to feed and breathe, I would get the HV to see her first thing tomorrow. You will probably be still seeing the midwife anyway, are you? Don't worry about it too much. I found that when my ds2 had a cold, aged only 8 days, it was scary in a way, but also, because his breathing was so noisy, I could at least hear him breathing even in the middle of the night, and that was reasssuring!

cheers penguin and gothic, got good tips from health visitor but basically a sort of 'relax she'll be ok' vibe... which is so hard... still snuffly today but got through a night and will get through another. Suppose this is just the way it goes eh?

Can you sit in the bathroom with her and run the shower so its steamy? Might help her nose to run a bit??? There is a product called snuffle babe which is like baby vicks, but I've no idea if its appropriate for very tiny ones, though I don't see why not (ask the pharmacist)
She will be fine though, whatever you decide! Just think, everytime she gets a cold, she is creating lots of immunity to other viruses - clever girl!

spots, try massaging some vicks vapour rub into her feet (although check with a professional that it's okay as she is so very young). A reflexologist recommended this to me for my son and it worked a treat. Massage into the ball of the foot and the instep particularly.
Hope she gets better.

When my daughter was like this, I used to stick a couple of books under the feet at one side of the cot, it seemed that she slept better slightly propped up. HTH
