Alternating long and short menstrual cycles and pain

For the last 6 months I've been having alternating cycle lengths- for example:

23 days
35 days
22 days
31 days

On the short cycle I get very bad lower back/abdominal pain on my right hand side that sometimes radiates down my leg. The last time it was so bad I couldn't stand up straight and was considering heading to a+e when it suddenly stopped. The pain only happens during my period on my "short" cycle and I feel fine and well the rest of the month and during my "long" cycle.

I went to the doctor 3 months ago and she felt around and couldn't find anything and suggested getting the mirena coil saying that it might help with the symptoms. Had it for 3 months now and it's made no difference – if anything the pain is worse.

I'm 30 years old with 2 children and was on the pill before having children with no problems. Tried pill again after youngest born and got extreme migraines and bled constantly on mini-pill. So just stuck to condoms and that's when this all started.

I'm going to make a doctors appointment again but has anyone ever experienced anything similar? Do you think I should wait a bit longer for the mirena to settle? I've just started my period on my short cycle and I can feel the pain building, I'm just fed up and worried Sad

Hi, I know this is an old thread but just wondering the outcome as in experiencing almost exactly the same as you described....

Hope all was OK in the end

I have a very similar pattern. Short cycle (25 days) with abdominal pain, then a long cycle (27-28 days) with very little pain. It's been going on for years, and it's very predictable. I have two different cycles.
