Iron deficiency, iron supplementation & (hair loss)

So about 6-8 weeks ago I had a blood test and the doc prescribed iron tablets for me: ferrous fumarate 210mg.

It's not the first time I've had to have iron supplements. My body seems to be really crap at keeping my iron levels up!

Anyway, I'm going to see the doc again to have a chat about it but meantime I wanted to ask if anyone has had experience of recurring iron deficiency? Also, if you had supplements whether you noticed any positive effect on your hair? My hair is sooo thin Sad

Since hitting peri-menopause, I have had low iron - about 8 years now. By low I mean 7-20. It is currently 21 because I am taking large doses of tablets!

I have extremely thick hair, so that is not a problem. But also have extremely flaky fingernails and I read somewhere that that can be linked. They are a bit better ATM - whether or not that is because of the extra iron, I don't know?

Oh I just have come across a mammoth thread on low iron a bit further on here - maybe we should pop over and join that one?
